Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

Hi,
I’ve just finished a couple of Art Asylum upgrades I thought I’d share with you.
All the replacement metal parts are from federationphaser.
On both of them I cut the handle off and reattached it after painting. This is so I could get rid of the join line. I glued some brass channel inside the handle to give it some weight. This together with the metal parts give the phasers a nice feel.
On the black phaser the knob at the back is a bit cut off an aluminium modelling knife. The finns are just layers of plastic card. Because the phaser 1 has no wheel to adjust the settings, it’s locked on maximum. The overload setting still works though.
I’m working on another one at the moment, I’m probably going to opt for an all grey one this time.
James.

Beautiful job on the phasers James!:thumbsup I can't wait to see the grey version you make. What did you use for the number squares on B&W phaser?

Thanks for your comment guys.
Hi spacerone, the numbers on the black phaser are letraset on very thin plastic card. They are just laid in the holes with acrylic pieces on top. The acrylic is not glued, it’s just a push fit. I’m thinking of replacing them with thinner pieces, so they don’t stick up so much, or maybe even flush.
I used the original LED on the grey phaser, but I changed the LED on the black phaser for a bright blue one.

While looking at the Blurays, we've noticed that the b&w buttons are rounded over. And there's no white backing or numbers, just clear domes. The numbers do make more sense as controls though.

Thanks! This looks very accurate when compared to a photo of one that is in a museum that was on the show (see photos). It looks like it may even have the numbers 1 & 10 on it.

Robn1 or anyone do you know what the measurements of those two plastic pieces might be? And the measurements of the metal piece in back that is in the same place where the 10 turn dial would be? :confused

Best guess on size of the buttons is 5/16in. Metal stud is about 5/16 to 3/8in, and about half as high as tobor's.

The b&w pictured above belongs to Greg Jein, it's a Mark English fake. The b&ws were all repainted, so there wouldn't be one still around. This is where the numbers under the buttons came from, but the original props didn't have them.

Hi,
The LED is a 5mm high brightness blue one.
It’s just wired directly to the two pins, like the original LED but without the switch.
I’ve got five Art Asylum phasers, and the blue LED would only work with two of them.
I tried a 5mm bright white LED and it would only work with the same two phasers.

Okay, broke down and picked up a AA phaser today for a rebuild. Can't wait to get started!

Any idea where to get the Zynolyte Dark Grey paint without having to buy a case of 6?

You can try and ask Tony, he may have some available. Here is his website federationphaser . I ordered a case of phasers and some parts from him last month and I asked if he might have some paint he would be willing to sell and he was nice enough to sell me some of his paint with my order.

Yeah Jein's B&W is usually considered to be fake... he showed it at Worldcon 2006 tho and I got some good shots anyway...

Phase pistol nice photos. Would you say this is an accurate likeness to the real B&W phaser? I want to convert one of my Art Asylum Phasers into a B&W version. With your close-up photos it should be a little easier to create.

Here are the best caps of B&W phasers.
