Arkham Origins Batman Costume: Cheap and quick build

Hi RPF, I'd like to share my project for last Halloween. This is my take on Batman Arkham Origins. The whole suit was built using foam from two old camping mats (not really sure if it's the right type of foam, but oh well) and some old clothes. The cowl is also entirely freehand, made from a plastic bag, tape, cardboard and a bit of paper mache. The total cost came to just under £10, as the only things bought were spray paint and fabric for the cape. All in all, pretty happy with the results, but I may add more detail/correct bits. Let me know what you think.

Re: Arkham Origins Batman Cosyume: Cheap and quick build

Sadly, I didn't get any decent pictures of it on Halloween, so I'll touch it up a bit and post some photos. One thing I'm quite proud of is how the zip works on the cowl to get it on. The ears were wrong in some of the photos, so I adjusted them to have more of a curve and taper towards the top. I'm also happy with the nose being cut out; looks more accurate and means breathing is easier.

Cheers man! I was looking at a lot of your photos, along with some other great Batman Arkham threads for reference. You were talking about upgrading your cowl; maybe with your skill level and the right finishing, you could use this method but with better results? Loving the detail on yours.

Here are some photos of the painted suit. The neck part of the cowl tucks in under the part which the cape mounts to, hiding the zipper and the buttons on the back of the shirt. You'll see what I mean in the second photo. The parts are hot glued to the shirt, but on the jeans I had to stitch it in the end due to glue not sticking. Photos to come will show the bat symbol, gloves, cape and belt.

Forgot to mention, I don't have a heat gun to shape parts, so I ironed the flat panels on a low setting through an old t-shirt. Seemed to work okay, so if you don't have a heat gun, that could be an easy option for you. I microwaved the shoulder bells between two bowls but it stuck a bit to the bowls and seemed like a bad idea. Some folk put foam in ovens, but I was scared of melting something and making some bad smells...if you have any other alternatives to heating foam, throw em up; your info would be very useful.

Unless this is just a one time thing and you never plan on doing this stuff again, I would just recommend to purchase a heat gun... they are only about $10-$20 at any hardware store...
you can also probably use a blow dryer although it would take a bit longer to heat up the foam .

Looks awesome though. Ill be checking this thread out see your updated pics

Yeah you can usually get a heat gun at Harbor freight for like $8.99.

Fair, I'll probably invest in one. It was gonna be a one off but since it turned out okay, I'm tempted to work with foam again on another project. On another note, I just realised I mispelt 'costume' in the title with consyume :facepalm Any way to edit that?

The more I'm looking at this the more I want to add and change bits like the abs. Since the gauntlets need fixing along with other things, I may as well tart them them up a bit with more detail. one thing I'm undecided on though is the cowl. I'm happy with how the mask looks and thought the foam neck would contrast with the texture, but it looks a bit messy and I prefer how the paint turned out on the mask. Should I just cover the neck and other bits in masking tape and re-paint? OR should I do what you guys did and try to plastidip it to keep the texture, so the neck and mask look separate. What do you think?
