Are there any other young prop makers out there?

So I'm 17 years old and I have been enthralled by prop making and special effects. I joined the RPF because I am wanting to build my own Apollo A7L spacesuit and thought this would be the perfect place to find suit references and building tips. I know that this is a very large project for someone my age to handle but it's something that I'd love to make and have.

Is anyone else young and prop crazy like me? Or, does anyone have any advice for somebody just getting into prop making and special effects?

Respond with whatever, just don't hit below the belt.

Hey, I too am 17. Got into prop making largely because it goes hand in hand with filmmaking. I've had a few projects, but just semi-recently joined the RPF (signed up a while ago, had account problems), I started over at the 405th forums. Biggest obstacles, as always, are cash and time :p.

Anyway, glad to see someone else around the same age. Welcome to the boards.

16 here. Main reason I joined is for help/advice from the AMAZING builders on this site. Not too prop crazy yet, mostly because I don't have the money and can never choose anything to build because I keep jumping between ideas

I'm 16 too, (Even though I'll be 17 in like a week!) and the main reason I joined this site was just to see all the other awesome stuff people make! I would make more costumes, but money is always a big problem. Making costumes is expensive!

I'm not too old (24), and I think it's great you guys are getting involved at such a young age. I wish I would have gotten involved 7 years, I just recently started myself. My advice as you all stated your biggest obstacles are time and money, is to work on something piece by piece. Don't try or spend all the money to make an Iron Mark 7 suit in one go. Start with the helmet, cod piece, or whatever it is you want to start working on. You may just inspire your parents to help you financially in your efforts. I know I'd definitely help my kid if I saw what he was doing.

19 here. I joined because of all the epicness that came with the builds. I too started at 405th and have yet to really commit to a costume. Time and money are the biggest obstacles

Yo!

I wish I had started on the RPF like you guys. I wasted years botching projects and "learning" before I found the forums.

My suggestions? Start small. I see lots of first time builders shoot for the moon on their first project and never finish it or rush it and it looks like junk. Start small. take your time. Learn. Read all the threads.

Want to start? Go make a foam Iron Man Helmet. Hot glue and foam are cheap and versatile. Put in the time to make it clean.
