Are mannequins for prop display creepy?

Depends on what you're putting on it definitely. If its something like a superman suit, get solid white or black with no head. If it's full covering, like a stormtrooper or vader, you'll be fine to get whatever, as long as it's not in a feminine pose.

Funny story, I ordered a mannequin for my sandtrooper many years ago (have since sold it) and when it arrived it was packaged in a box with TONS of styrophone shavings. not packing peanuts, fine shavings, like snow but full of static. I thought rather than get that stuff all over my apartment, I'd take it to the dumpster and dump it out there. Once I got everything out and wiped off, i couldn't carry all the pieces separately at once so I put it together and started carrying it back to the apartment. In perfect timing, these two rather attractive girls pulled up and stopped to stare at me carrying a full sized naked man-statue to my apartment. I looked at the mannequin and back up at them and said, "I don't guess it would help if I explained what I'm doing, would it?"
the driver said, "nope." so I laughed, shrugged, and walked off.
After that, they'd go out of their way to avoid me. Oh well.

I wish i could find some cheap for my costumes and such. If the mall security wasn't so touchy i'd raid the broken ones behind the mall in the dumpsters lol. All i find at the local salvage yard are heads and misc bits. time to start making duct tape ones i guess.

i made my own out of pvc pipe, tape, and newspaper. the entire thing cost me roughly 20 bucks. AND its 6'6", same height as me.

it STILL scares the crap out of my girlfriend when she walks into the movie room, but to me, thats part of the fun! nothing like seeing my girlfriend jump every time she walks into the room and catches a 6'6" jason voorhees standing in the corner out of the corner of her eye.

I have a few mannequins, and once or twice I have been laying in bed almost asleep and thought "I hope that son of a ***** isn't standing next to my bed..."

So yea, even with full display costumes they can be creepy. My mom used to freak the hell out cause I bought my dad a life sized John Wayne cardboard standup, and it always surprised her when she walked into the office.

I still make fun of a friend of mine who wanted to buy a little teenager kid mannequin for a edward elric costume. He didn't think that all the way through when he was planning his display :lol

They take a while to get used to in your house. If your not on your toes you'll get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and a) have a coronary or b) fall down the stairs or c) both. :lol

I got one to assist with assembly/storage/display of my Batman armor, and yeah, for the first few weeks it would startle me whenever I went into my work room. Even when I would consciously think "ok, remember, there's a half-dressed Batman in the corner..." I'd still feel a bit of surprise. So I put it in the closet. :rolleyes

Go for it...

I have four placed around the house... Don't hardly notice them now, neither do the wife or 6 year old...
Great reaction from new visitors when they seem to jump every time they turn a corner...

If you want a mannequin, get a mannequin. Simple as that. If we all lived our lives based on what other people think, we'd never leave the house.

yeh, go for it!! They are a fantastic way to display your costumes. I only wish I had room for more :) I currently just have the one, displaying my original series BSG Colonial Warrior costume, although I tend to rotate my costumes on it every couple of months.

I have plenty of mannequins - People don't find them creepy once they have the costumes/props on them. The box of leftover sawed off body parts on the other hand..... :lol

I use to have one and every single time I would walk into that room it scared the crap out of me, had to get rid of it.

Here is my mannequin.

It's funny, I actually grew up with a mannequin in the house. While in college, my dad worked at a department store, and one day they were throwing out a bunch of the old mannequins, but they were still in good shape, so, just kind of randomly and for the heck of it, he fished one out of the dumpster and saved it. So, all my life we had a mannequin in the basement dressed up, so I never found them creepy, and it eventually become used to display first my brother's, and then my costumes when he moved out. Then when I was in college, the clothing store near campus was going out of business and was selling everything, literally everything including the cash registers, so I picked up a mannequin of my own, which now wears another one of my costumes.

So, no, I don't think mannequins wearing a costume are creepy, and that in fact they are a cool and impressive way to display your costumes. Now, just leaving the mannequin naked in the corner of your room, that starts to get creepy....

No, not creepy at all :) - I have an Indiana Jones Mannequin in my home and I get lots of nice comments about it. People do get scared sometimes tough if they don't know it's there and think it's a real person LOL :D

Reminds me of the story someone posted about having the cops checking out their house for a possible burgler and the cops almost shot the guy's Yoda mannequin :)

I bought a female child mannequin to remake into a bjork robot, I like to place it beside the window and make people believe that someone is watching them all the time :)

Wasn't that Art's experience? :)

Man, I'd love to have a mannequin. If nothing else, I'd keep my scuba diving gear on it until I got a better costuming idea. :) I do plan on making my own duct tape dummy soon, but I'll be sculpting over it and don't think my wife would allow it in the house regardless. She can barely stand having ME around as it is! :lol

They are only creepy if you make your own, using real body parts.
It puts lotion on its body! It does what it's told!

I tend to hide my mannequins behind closed doors and only show them to like minded people.
I do tend to have a creepy/saddo feel to the whole situation, but as others have posted, you shouldn't feel embarressed about your hobby.
I may at some point bring them downstairs for the whole world to enjoy!!!
