Anyone working on a Mat Smith Sonic Screwdriver?

The problem with the 11th Doctor's sonic is that so far, all we have for reference is "spy photos" taken on set from some distance away. They're often blurry or taken from too far away to make the prop out in any real level of detail. It's about like trying to recreate 10's sonic screwdriver based only on, oh, say, the miniature one that comes with an action figure of his Doctor. The level of detail you'd get would be too low to be satisfying.

Once his episodes start airing in the spring and we get to see the new prop on screen, properly filmed with the HD cameras, I imagine you'll see someone start working on reproductions of the prop, maybe even several someones, knowing the RPF! :)
 
Yes - you're right Jack, I think it will be useless without proper close-ups or official pics - but when have they (BBC) given us those?:lol
I would wait until at least the toy is available - which I would say there will be plenty of:rolleyes -

  1. The DK published Visual Guide book.
  2. Closeups of the prop in the actual show itself. And now that the show is finally filming in HIGH DEFINITION, those closeups of the hero props will look REALLY good! :):thumbsup
  3. Publicity photos of the Doctor.

Same here! But so far, I haven't heard of any plans to make one available. IF MFX Warehouse offers more prop replicas (after the Series/Season 4 Sonic Screwdriver that's currently available) the next 2 should be the Master's Laser Screwdriver and the Master's Signet Ring, which are the only other props they've shown prototypes for. And the unlicensed prop makers haven't revealed any plans to do that prop, either, at least not that I'm aware of. :unsure
 
shame, I can't find a pen which matches the prop - looked everywhere
Am thinking to pay someone to machine the pen out of Aluminum:) - which is the same material as the screwdriver - but what to do for the black body? - on Doctorwhotoys.net they interviewed - the prop maker nick robatto - who im sure created the prop - looking at close-ups you can see styles similar to the construction of the screwdriver even the small slide-up tip of the pen!

Sorry, I forgot the visual dictionary! but if yuo look on the bbc site you get no good images of just the screwdriver?

CT's sonic looks great actually, but from what he tells me he's going to be doing a 4th Doctor sonic next. Tell ya though, if that thing Matt smith is holing IS in fact the new sonic, I'm really hoping they change it to the Silence in the Library model soon after XD It just looks too goofy. XD
 
The Silence in the Library sonic is the old one that SPOILERS they blew up on set. My guess is he'll repair it and give it to River Song after replacing it with the one he's tossing in the above picture.

Goofy, it looks phallic. And it looks huge compared to past versions. Would have liked to have seen the future one, that design was nice.

If you look at the future sonic it's not actually that difficult to replicate. It's basically an unfinished outline version of the Doctor's with found bits bolted on and the head hasn't been drilled out.

Does that mean you'll be making one then? I doubt anyone else is going to be making it, unless someone releases a cheapo die cast jobby. Actually, change that to expensive cheapo die cast jobby.

Not sure yet, I kind of have my hands full finishing some sonic screwdriver right now

Maybe you should start a thread on your progress and findings, at least we can get to the bottom of the 'differences' then in a decent debate which hopefully won't involve you telling me to have dodgy relations with my mom :eek

What differences are you talking about? The inaccuracy of the MFX version is well documented in my blog but if you are refering to the differences in the half dozen or so individual props that have existed over the four seasons, then you are really, really opening a big can of worms.
