Anyone planning on picking up the Target Helmets and "improving" on them?

I cut out the holes in the right cheek. They're not 100% accurate, and I may do a bit of reshaping, but overall I'm pretty happy. I have to bevel the edges yet, and I still need to remove material from the interior of the helmet; I need to make the cheek parts about 1/8" thick. I wish that I could give it a zap of primer, but it is WAY too cold outside right now. Winter is coming, and it's totally cramping my rattlecan-style :thumbsdown :lol

Yeah, it's getting cold here, as well. The workshop is warm, at least.

Didn't mention it earlier, but I'm going to leave the chrome cheek details symmetrical on mine.

Finished hand-filing all of the lines on the back of the helmet. That was fun. When I say "fun," I mean "Damn, my index finger is sore." It turned out nice, though. I started working on the visor/screen material, too.

I still need to bondo the original seam where the two halves were joined together. I also need to start shopping for paint.

A little more progress over the past couple evenings. The the outer seam where the two halves were velcroed together has been bondoed/sanded.

I bought some Rustoleum "Hammered" black spray paint and painted some on a scrap piece of plastic, along with a flat clear coat. I like the look of it. Here's a couple pics of it at different angles.

That's a pretty good surface. I had thought to try one of the fine "stone" texture sprays, but that looks nice.

The hammered paint come out nice. I will have to go pick some up for my Black Series Kylo Ren conversion

Does anyone know of anybody selling the four clips that go on the target stormtrooper helmet. The mold of the helmet is so poor the clips have lost their detail. I was going to sand them off and add my own more detailed ones and was wondering if anybody was selling them.

p.s. if you don't what the clips are here is a photo of them:

The Anovos prototype helmet looks like a finer textured paint was used on it. The screen caps from the trailer and the reference pics from Celebration Anaheim look hammered with a little gloss.

I've decided to use the black window screen (4 layers) for the visor. Accurate or not, it looks and works good. Haven't decided what to use behind the chrome cheek details yet.

Looking forward to getting it in primer soon. :thumbsup

Do we even know what kind of mesh is used on the visor, are there any photos of it?

It looks like a fabric was used on the one that was on display at the recent SW Celebration. That doesn't mean it was used on screen, though.

I think I have some old 5.11 tactical socks that resemble what was used under the cheek holes.

Slow and steady...

Question: How do I get rid of the stenciling marks? A standard rubber eraser seems like it'd be pretty hard on the paint...

More progress. The battle damage has been dremeled in, it's in primer and I've been trimming/fine tuning the lower jaw parts. I ended up epoxying an 8/32 screw on each side and bolting the lower jaw parts in place. The piece w/the fangs behind the face plate is velcroed in.

The screen visor is 4 layers and is temporarily taped in place. Not pictured, but I've been working on the fabric to go behind the cheek holes and a plastic backing for them.

Has anyone managed to find the Fett one at an alright price online? I've found an Australian Ebay seller who's got stock of Kylo and TFO TK, but I'm really chasing the Fett and not paying through the nose....

For the Canadian members....it looks as if target.com is shipping to Canada now (started 22 Oct 2015) but apparently there are a list of extra charges, so be careful because the price will certainly be much higher. Still, some exclusive SW merchandise may be cheaper to get this way, rather than going onto eBay and hoping not to get gouged by sellers there.

New reference pic found on Facebook. The paintwork doesn't look as beat up (meaning silver paint weathering apps) as the Anovos prototype or Black Series Voice Changer. It looks like it has some gloss to it, like the helmet that was on display at SW Celebration.

I've been sitting here looking at mine, trying to figure out how to paint it. I guess it'll be like this...

1. Tape off the silver accents areas

2. Spray the hammered black paint

3. Add slight weathering and clearcoat

4. Remove tape covering the silver accents areas

5. Tape up the rest of the helmet, leaving the silver accents areas exposed

6. Spray the silver accents areas

I bought some fine line tape, but taping this thing up twice will not be fun.

Spray the silver first. Then you only have to mask it once.

I don't have a lot of faith in the silver having tape stuck to it. Maybe if I let it dry for a week.

I actually ended up buying Rustoleum "Chrome" spray paint. I did a test shot of it and it looks better than plain silver. It says a clear coat is not recommended on it.

looks like small helmet

I was thinking the same thing!

I am no Kylo Ren expert, but I'm thinking the size of the production helmets are somewhere between the Black Series Voice Changer and the Rubies version.

Some good progress in the past two days. Taped it up last night and shot it today.

I was starting to wonder if the cooler temperature this afternoon was causing problems with the color of the hammered paint. It had more of a "gunmetal" color and I didn't remember the test shot on the scrap piece of plastic looking like this.

I was hoping for the clearcoat to solve my problem and it did not disappoint. Very happy with the final result.

I didn't do any additional weathering between the paint and clear. My handiwork is never near 100% accurate and it more or less looks like what I've seen in the trailers.
