Another week long budget build: The Tech Rifle from Oblivion

Once in a while, when I get some free time from my hectic work schedule, I like to indulge myself in budget builds normally taking not more than a week. Last year I made my budget hoverboard from cardboard and foam and earlier this year I made some Star Trek PADDs out of styrene. These week long builds are normally quick and dirty build and though I try to a certain extent to maintain a certain degree of accuracy, I am severely limited by the materials and tools I used, as well as my skill level. Tools wise, I usually just use a board cutter, a metal ruler, wall filler and glue. No Dremel or any other precision tools were involved. As I said, quick and dirty.

This time round I decided to build myself a tech rifle from Oblivion. I loved the movie so much due to the intricate designs of the sets and the props, and the first time I saw that rifle, I knew I had to have one. Wondersquid did an outstanding job on his kit; his attention to detail is just mind blowing. His build thread helped me a lot in my own build and I owe him thanks.

In my search for reference I came across this blog where a guy posted plans for a printable Oblivion rifle. It was nowhere near accurate but I used it as a base and tried to accurize it along the way, especially the vents.

I traced the template for the shell onto styrene and cut it out.

Once folded this is what I got:

I made further modifications to it to make it more accurate to the movie rifle and attached it to a toy M16 (about 3/4/ the size of a real one), since there was no way I could get my hands on a airsoft of a Magpul Masada in my neck of the woods. :lol Here's the first test fit in the shell:

I had to trim the toy down (with a hack saw) to fit in the shell, but even then it was still a bit loose inside the shell. So I padded the inside of the shell with more styrene to get a better fit. I also added the secondary top layer on the shell with thinner styrene.

Next I made the scope. The round front part is actually a cap from an air freshener. :lol The knurled adjusting knob is the base of a Vicks Inhaler

Next comes painting. Dark grey (it was gloss so I had to dull it down with sandpaper) and flat white.

So after painting and weathering, I assembled all the pieces together (with the help of Superglue and hot glue) For the greeblies on the rifle, I just used more styrene and whatever parts I could find lying in the house. This is what I ended up with:

I used three red colored thumbtacks for my scope infra red viewer. :p

I also built an Oblivion style single point sling like the Magpul MS3 they used in the movie.

There are tons of inaccuracies, of course, but as I said, I'm limited by my tools, time and my skills. But it was an enjoyable build.

Now to go fix some drones. :)

Thanks, Sean!

I used 4.5mm styrene for most of the build, with 2mm styrene for the upper layer of the shell and the miscellaneous buttons and greeblies.

This is amazing work! I wish I could go back to these wonderfully free days. When I was in my teens and hadn't been sucked into the tornado of the movie industry I used to make "kit bashes" like this out of whatever I could find. Half the time I didn't even use styrene because I didn't even know what it was at that point! :lol You've done a wonderful job and should be commended for your work sir! I started down the pro path this way, maybe you should look into furthering your skill sets as well. I think you have the makings of it, just go for it! You could even start with the scary Dremel! :) Thanks for the shout out and can't wait for you to do the pistol now!

Wow, thanks for the kind words, Mal! :) Means a lot coming from you since I was inspired by your build in the first place.

I'd probably forego the pistol since I'm not as keen on it as I am on the rifle. My next build would probably and hopefully be the Arc Generator from District 9. :p

There you go again, following in my footsteps!! Dammit man, come work for me!:lol

Your budget builds always make me inspired and want to rush out and try to do something of my own, still not enough space to try anything major yet but I`ll figure that out as soon as I can get the heck off the 11pm - 7am shift.

Thanks, guys! Gphalen, if I can do it, anyone can! I don't have working space too... I do my builds on the dining table and the kitchen top, much to wifey's annoyance. :p

Thats really awesome! and I cant believe you did it in a week! Dont knock your skills. You obviosly have them. Just keep building and trying new methods and your skills will improve, not that it looks like the need much improving. Cant wait to see your arc gun!

I just saw this while looking through Oblivion theads...Gotta say, it looks awesome!!!!! I would love to own one!
