Another Rebels Build - Hera's Goggles

Well, Here I go with another Star Wars: Rebels build.

Here is the story... This weekend I went to a Maker event that was hosted by the local 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, and R2 Builders. Well one of the people I was talking to is doing a Hera costume. He asked if I was interested in building Hera's Goggles.

How can I turn down such a challenge... :$

This is as far as I got. Right now everything is color coded to keep track of the various parts. The Light Grey part is the pad off of a Industrial Ear Muffs and the blue part is part of the frame off of another pair of ear muffs (for cold weather)

One thing I am having a bit of trouble finding is a pair of lenses for the goggles. Ideas anyone?

Process is being made (believe it or not)

Both ear pad mounts are made. and the first of the outside Cap is now being printed. At 4 hours & 39 min (prox, more like 5+ hours) this is my longest print so far.

UPDATE: Well that didn't work like I planned. I went off to get some dinner and when I returned I noticed that the part broke free from the bed. I have a few more options to try, but it being New Years Eve I might not be able to get the required supplies tonight (or tomorrow).

More to come...

Alright, progress continues.

The first 2 pics are the outer most cap. The third is the base with the ear pad mounted.

The good news is the I getting the parts to print. The bad news is the part is that the part keep breaking free from the printer bed as they are printing. In other words, they are warped. But I am getting parts that I can test fit and tweak the design.

EDIT: The parts I have... Assembled.

I still have to solve the Warping. But I think it's a nice start.

Here is the final design (hopefully).

Hera Goggles Mk2.JPG Hera.jpg

I have most of the initial problems solved and now I can focus on printing up these parts and test fitting them.

So far what is missing is the Chin Strap, the lenses, the strap that goes between the google pieces, and (obviously) the right side assembly which is a mirror of what is shown.

The Chin Strap I'm thinking of using a 1/2" wide brown Dog Collar
The Lenses are 50mm clear replacement lenses for Welding goggles
The Nose Bridge Strap will probably be a scrap piece of leather

Colors
Metal parts - Chrome Paint
Brown rigid parts - Krylon Hammered Finish in Brown or Bronze.

Comments? Criticisms? Suggestions? Bueller? Bueller??

They look fantastic. My one question/suggestion would be to allow the goggles to pivot down onto the face. This is the image that made me think of the feature.

Not sure how possible the movement is.

Movement is not only very possible, but designed into the build. Considering that I do not have Live Test Subjects (MUHahahaha cough cough cough) I'm not sure how tight the goggles will fit over the eyes, but this is only the Mk2 version and I think I'm really close.

I wasn't planning on posting any more pictures until more parts were done, but...

Also, the last time I checked, Styrofoam Heads are not alive. :confused or co-operative :behave

Something I've been hung up on is the lack of "round" to the overall shape of the headset. I did a ****ty version out of worbla a few months back but it illustrates the round look that I think this set is missing.

There is more than a few things wrong with the set, which is why they aren't in current use, but you can see that both the inner and outer pieces have that dome structure.

:)

Hmm

If you are talking about the base of the Earcup, I'm not really seeing the Spherical shape, it looks more like a cone to me. If you are talking about outside of the Goggle Frame Pivot, I may of made a bit to/too/tutu flat.

On another note... More Progress! Lower Goggle Frame being printed.

hehe. Tutu.

I was noting the difference on the outside portion. It looks a bit too drastically angled. Hera's set looks like the outer shell slopes more gradually, to more of a dome than a cone.

Yay progress!

A couple of CAD updates while the printer is busy
Hera Goggles Mk3.JPG OR Hera Goggles Mk4.JPG

is it just me, or is the second one just a bit overly pudgy?

Does look a little fatter on the right one.

Maybe It's because of where the outer circle indent is positioned? Or just the angle.

I see the light at the end of the tunnel... (Do you hear a Train?)

The Leather Chin strap is in place. It's looking kind of big in the pic because the Styrofoam head is a bit small (Child size? it was the only one I could find)

I tried to do the Goggle in 2 parts to make it easier to make it easier to paint. Unfortunately, they do not like fitting together. So I had to redesign them as 1 piece, I'll just have to deal with masking now.

My supervisor, Keeping an eye on the progress :)

There comes a stage in every project that requires the use of Live Test Subjects icon_twisted.gif

I really don't want to do any finish work until I know that there are not going to be any more Major Changes.

As you can see, my head is a poor substitute for a Twi'lek Lady. Possible points of adjustment, Nose Bridge width & possibly Goggle Frame Width

My wife tried these on today (the ones Mike made above) and they are simply fantastic. As soon as we get the Lekku finished and goggles painted I will post pictures. The goggles actually being able to pivot was a nice touch as well. We should have the entire Hera costume finished in a few weeks if all goes well.

Well, the hard part is done (at least on my end :thumbsup)

I was building this for TK-5156 and his wife who is currently working on her Hera costume. You will notice in the pics that the goggle parts are different (size & color). I came prepared for the test fit with a smaller set of goggles in black. They seem to fit her head a lot better than the original ones in white (a reduction of 1/2" per side).

They are going to do the finish work on these, once they can color match to the rest of her costume. All in all, I like the way the came out.

Ok, ok... I maybe slacking a bit. Since TK 5156 is doing the finish work, I sometimes forget to post updates. :rolleyes

Here are some pics of the nearly finished goggles. :love
