Just a heads up. There is an ebay member called leighp514, don't know if he is a member here, but it looks like he is selling copies of the total recall Kuato wanted posted i offered here for free and for personal non profit use. Looks like he is selling other paper props i saw here too, like potter paper props, star wars credentials and Indy props.

His bio cracks me up-

"HOBBIES : making items that I have developed myself from an idea or drawing."

Looks like hes got a crapload of paper props for sale .

I really don't get people like that. It takes a person with a very low moral threshold to profit from someone else's kindness and love of the hobby. :thumbsdown

Chin up LeMarchand, we love you :thumbsup. Your poster hangs proudly on my wall :)

After closer inspection there are some differences, but the similarities are there. Same happened with that ultraviolet paperphone i offered for free, the seller of that made some small changes but left in the tells. Also that recall bussinescard looks like the one i offered here years ago as well.

What pisses me off, is that people are paying money for something they can get for free and the people who made it don't get recognition.

If you check Ebay, there are tons of paper props from the RPF...

Im pretty sure all the BTTF props are the free paper props... The phone book page is the page jedifyve posted, the High Quality Tales from space and fantastic stories magazine are on ebay since I gave them away for free...

also the eric stoltz photos, the harry potter stuff, ...

Here are some members who sell all these stuff, what you get from here...

If we could find out who it is, that would be very satisfying...

These guys are just pathetic. It's not like they're going to easily make any sizable amount of money from this, so why not just give it up. If they used the time they put into this in order to pursue a real business venture, or - gasp - making their own props, they could easily make more...or at the very least be more satisfied.

Also, I think we need a new term for paper prop recasters...Xeroxers? :lol

If there's "some differences" then perhaps this guy just made his own version of the prop that the graphic artist who worked on TOTAL RECALL designed? You copied this graphic artist's work, and perhaps this guy on ebay did, too? Yeah, maybe it sucks to see someone selling things that you gave away for free, but I don't imagine the guy is getting rich selling them. Think for a second how the underpaid graphics guy feels who probably spent weeks designing and redesigning that graphic for a difficult director who wanted revision after revision... He's probably thinking, "Hmmmm, if that guy sells 5 of those things, he will have made more money from that graphic than I did. And he didn't even have to go through the nightmare of trying to please all of the department heads, a director, 4 writers, 3 producers, 2 production designers and a propmaster."

He mentioned that there were tells that he had put in that were not on the original that are on these copies. That's good enough for me.

It's pretty simple for a person to get screengrabs of a paper item on screen make it in something like photoshop add some off tells so it does'nt look like the screen item exactly perfect but it might look like one made in the paper props section and someone will throw a fit that a eBay seller is selling their work, now there are some people that for sure they are selling a persons work from here on the RPF just because all the tells are there from one paper prop to another unless it's a exact replica from a film then that person on eBay can sell it if they want to even if it looks just like yours that looks exactly like the movie version.

Let's not turn this into another 'copyright' thread, but .....

LeMarchand claims the one on eBay is the one he made.

However it is that he made it, it involved 'work', and he was kind enough to post it for free.

That is the point here I believe, ie. someone taking that end result of LeMarchands 'work', posted for free, and making a profit on it.

That is a big no-no in my books, whichever way you look at it, and if LeMarchand knows for certain, due to the 'tells' he put on it, that it is his 'work', then he has every right to be annoyed. IMO.

Onkelpsycho also identified other items that this seller is selling on eBay as being from the Free Paper Props section.

As I said before, it takes a person with a very low moral threshold to profit from someone else's kindness and love of the hobby.

I've been giving a lot of thought to the paper prop recasters on ebay ever since I joined the RPF (so I could see the Paper prop forum). I have two ideas. First one: I am sure there are several avid ebay sellers here. I am sure someone (or a few people) who has an ebay store could list all of the paper products from here in his store. As long as his "buy it now prices" were just for paper and ink he could out sell all the recasters. He could even make nickles and dimes on it and put it into a fund for the RPF as a whole. Maybe it goes to charity maybe it goes to pay for the next idea.

The other thought would be to advertise about the free paper props (e.g. on google if someone types in "prop replica." I know I bought a collection of Dark Knight Joker cards because I could not find any good pics to make my own. It was only after my ebay purchase that I found the RPF paper props by chance (I had known about the RPF in general though.) Now this would increase the popularity of the props and possibly increase recasters, but if the word got out enough, the demand would go away.

Neither is an ideal solution. Truly, if you don't want a recaster to profit you really just have to sell on ebay yourself. If the small amount of money they make off your work is not enough to motivate you to sell it yourself, then let them have their ill gotten gains, I guess. (That statement is not meant to belittle the problem, it is just a reality). Please don't let that discourage you from sharing work with the rest of us who use it responsibly. I love all that you talented artists do.

I'm an ebay "Powerseller" but i outright purchase or trade for the items i sell.
Getting something for free then selling it for a profit without even telling the person who gave it to you is just low

Here's the perfect example: Entertainment ID Cards - ID Cards From the Identity Props Store

This little thief is selling other peoples work (incl 29 of my graphics) on his website, on ebay, on amazon and etsy.

He didn't even care for the watermark I put on this ID Card:

MACGYVER Phoenix Foundation for Research ID Card From the Identity Props Store

which he download for free here: CmdrKerner's deviantART Gallery

He even didn't bother to remove the picture and name from my deviantArt friend Shawn:

OSI ID Card Office Of Secret Intelligence Venture Bros From the Identity Props Store

which he downloaded on his gallery here:

walkingstranger on deviantART

This is not making fun anymore.....

What really stinks is if you want it to stop them, you have to stop selling, trading and giving away your work. Just show members here or other forums your threads on building and your work, then that forces the LAZY recasters to do their own work to sell then their own stuff can get recast from other recasters.
