Another Custom Bio - "more Than Meets The Eye"...

Since the first time I saw this:

(happens to be Tom's Rattler bio for those that don't know) I was always reminded of this:

I (finally) picked up a Rattler from Tom and started playing.  I have to say, the bio is one of the nicest casts I have in my collection.  It's nice and smooth, and the thickness is just right.  The details on the insert are amazingly crisp and clean, and there wasn't a single pin hole or bubble anywhere.  I highly recommend adding this bio to your collection!  After hours of cutting, grinding, sanding, and filling I ended up with this:

After several coats of paint, and a few 'do overs' I ended up with my very own Bumblebee bio helmet.

The lenses are made up of 3 layers.  The first layer is Lexan that was heat formed to fit the inside contours of the helmet.  The Lexan was frosted (using 220 grit sand paper) so the whole lens area would glow.  On top of that I placed regular old silver wire mesh, and topped it off with some thin acrylic sheet.  It was important to me to have a distinct 'eye' in the middle, so 3 blue LED's were soldered onto a custom circuit board and placed about 1/2" behind the lenses.  This gave me the glow I wanted and kept the look of actual 'eyes'.

I owe Tom a big thanks for allowing me a little artistic license with one of his helmets.  I'm quite sure there were time when he was think "WTF is he doing to my bio?"  Hopefully he's seen passed my madness to the beauty that this turned out to be.

So, whatcha think? lol

I was kind of unsure about this one when you first mentioned altering one of my Rattler bios.  Luckily I had the inside track and got to see it come together.  It's another great mashup and I think the eyes just set it off.  Good work!

It is awesome, brah You can definitely see the Bumblebee in the bio.
It took several attempts with a few different colors, but I think I finally achieved the look I was going for.  I appreciate the kind words.

As much as I wanted to keep it a secret Tom, I could tell you were a little unsure.  I figured I'd try save what little sanity you still claim to have left.  Wait till you see what I do with your Jackal...

That a sweet bio Brian. Love the Bumblebee effect. Are you going to put duel tri lasers in the bio.

Damn dude.  I thought I would see a red and blue bio but you came out with the Bumblebee Sting.  Nice customization of an already great bio.

Thanks!  I may add red LED's on both sides at some point.  Thing is, the housing I added on is pretty much solid, so it would take a little doing.  I hadn't planned on adding them, but now am thinking maybe I will.

Bumblebee has been my favorite since the cartoon first came on back in the 80's.  Who knows, I may end up doing a whole series of bios :)  I appreciate it buddy.

Thank you George.

I guess I forgot to mention I plan on adding the red Autobots symbol on the forehead.  I have the file on a jump drive, I just need to get it to the guy that does all our vinyl graphics and sign work.  I thought about cutting a stencil, but really wasn't confident enough in my oh-so-very unsteady hands.  I figured next time we take him an order I'd slip it in there and remind him how much business we do with him lol.

I really do appreciate the feedback guys  (y)

Great job again, I'm glad you didn't go for a pristine finish on it, love the weathering.
Thanks!  Honestly, it sat around for a few days in 'pristine' condition, and the more I looked at it, the more I wanted to chuck it out the window.  It looked pretty bad.  I was honestly at a point where it the weathering didn't change how I felt about it, I was gonna just do a straight up bio paint up and call it good.  Amazing what some brown/black washes can do!

Nice job Brian! Very creative indeed.
Thanks man!  Like I posted in my Jason hockey bio thread http://www.thehunterslair.com/topic/30604-gettin-creative-with-a-bio-update-with-high-res-pics/, I have 5 P1 bios that all have basically the same paint scheme.  My main reason for sculpting my own bio (which is long over do for an update) is that I have a ton of 'custom bio' ideas, and can't justify having to buy bio helmets to do them.  I appreciate the kind words buddy!

Hey Brian, you did a great job integrating the two concepts and I really like what you did with the eyes. They look fabulous! How did you go about duplicating the laser shroud? It looks spot on.

Sorry it has been awhile...

Thanks Steve.  When i bought it from Tom I had him pour me a second laser housing 'end piece' (I guess that's what you'd call it lol).  I cut out the tri hose attachment area and epoxied it into place.  I then built up the rest of the housing with several layers of fiberglass cloth, and finished it with apoxy sculpt.  Blended with spot putty and voila... second laser housing.  Honestly, it took me a few days to get the courage up to cut into the bio, for fear of screwing it up.  The more I look at it, the more I'm really liking the dual  laser housings.  Funny you should post this today... I'm working on a re-paint of one of your L1 bio's.  Stay tuned!   :D  It's good to hear form you my friend... don't be a stranger!

Brian

Ahh...I was wondering because it looked like the same material as the helmet itself. Kudos to Tom too for the symetry of it as you would have had to mount it upside down so to speak and it looks perfect. I am looking forward to your re-paint of the L1 as I always enjoy seeing what you come up with. Sorry I have been somewhat lurking for awhile. I have been busy with the foam swords and shields and I am currently making a custom order battle axe for a lady in California. I also just finished making a utility kilt and I am getting ready to make a paracord bullwhip. I know, I am all over the place....

Steve

Actually, the piece was mounted upside down Steve.  Still, Tom got it so close to dead symmetrical that it was a breeze to blend (I even checked it with calipers lol).  It does sound like you're keeping busy, but that's good, right?  Let me know if you need any more paracord, as I have thousands feet of all different colors that just take up space.  As far as your bio repaint, it's nothing drastic like this, just something a little different from what I already have.
