Since the first time I saw this:
(happens to be Tom's Rattler bio for those that don't know) I was always reminded of this:
I (finally) picked up a Rattler from Tom and started playing. I have to say, the bio is one of the nicest casts I have in my collection. It's nice and smooth, and the thickness is just right. The details on the insert are amazingly crisp and clean, and there wasn't a single pin hole or bubble anywhere. I highly recommend adding this bio to your collection! After hours of cutting, grinding, sanding, and filling I ended up with this:
After several coats of paint, and a few 'do overs' I ended up with my very own Bumblebee bio helmet.
The lenses are made up of 3 layers. The first layer is Lexan that was heat formed to fit the inside contours of the helmet. The Lexan was frosted (using 220 grit sand paper) so the whole lens area would glow. On top of that I placed regular old silver wire mesh, and topped it off with some thin acrylic sheet. It was important to me to have a distinct 'eye' in the middle, so 3 blue LED's were soldered onto a custom circuit board and placed about 1/2" behind the lenses. This gave me the glow I wanted and kept the look of actual 'eyes'.
I owe Tom a big thanks for allowing me a little artistic license with one of his helmets. I'm quite sure there were time when he was think "WTF is he doing to my bio?" Hopefully he's seen passed my madness to the beauty that this turned out to be.
So, whatcha think? lol
