Announcement: Wackychimp photo host

Hi all,

It's been about 10 years that I've had my free RPF image host online. I think it was one of the first such sites out there, built out of a desire to help the RPF. Back then there was no flickr, imageshack, picasa, etc. and lots of RPF threads would begin by someone saying:

"Hey I made [this cool prop]. Can someone host a few picutres for me?"

Then you'd have to wait around for someone to post back and offer to host, etc. So I built my image hosting script, free to all RPF members.

I'll be switching my hosts by the end of the month and the current script won't be supported on my new host (was on Microsoft.NET => moving to PHP). I'm looking into options now to continue the free service.

Two things:
  1. Are people even interested in me continuing the serivce or are you good using something else?
  2. All photos hosted on my server will go away on Aug 31,2009. If this presents a problem for anyone, please let me know and maybe we can figure something out.
I think that's it. Thanks for your feedback.

Mods: Please stick for a week or two.

I've used your service many times. I like it because it has been so easy to use. Whether you decide to continue offering the service or not, THANKS!

:(

I don't even understand enough what you mean to answer the question. Man - I sound like my granddad.

Thank you for all you've done for us, Wackychimp! :)

Will you be archiving the pictures and possibly making them browseable, in case there's a rare gem in there that would otherwise be lost?

Hi all,
I'll be switching my hosts by the end of the month and the current script won't be supported on my new host (was on Microsoft.NET => moving to PHP). I'm looking into options now to continue the free service.

I know a bit of PHP, I can probably help you transfer from .Net to PHP.
Drop me a line and let me know your requirments :)

Kai.

Still would like to see it go on, but I would like to thank you for hosting for so many years. I even bought a image cd from you years ago and found it to very useful.

i would love to see your photo hosting go on
i have used your hosting many many times
and to be honest it wont be the rpf without it

Sir, if anything, I have nothing but a HUGE list of thanks to you, and whether you continue this or not, the RPF as a whole has a debt of gratitude to you :)

That being said, if you still have the desire to sell any image CDs, I´d like to get one or many from you.

Hermes!

Would love for you to continue- used it numerous time to host images here for the RPF--Thanks!!

The Wackychimp photo host site has been the best photo sharing site I've ever used.

I love how fast and easy it has been and I'd hate to see it go.

Thank You so much for everything you've done and I hope you keep doing it.

Nearly every photo I've posted has been through Wackychimp and I'd really miss it if we lost it.

Thanks for all of the "thanks"! :D

I'm very glad that so many have found it useful. I'm thinking that I may try to transfer images that are already hosted on my site to the new servers. This way, at least no image links will be broken. Then I'll look into developing a new hosting site.

Also wanted to give a HUGE thanks for offering this service all these years.

I've used it for as long as I've been posting pics here. It's awesome.
90% of all of the pics I post on this site are hosted through your service.

If they all go bye-bye at the end of this month there are going to be a LOT of threads with big red X's all over them. Some of them are archived threads as well. :confused

.

Well, I hope your service doesn't go away! But if it does, thanks for all the pics over the years! It's much appreciated!

And I probably need to buy copies of your disc or discs.....

FYI - I haven't been doing the discs of photos recently because there was no demand for them. It's a lot of work to catalog them into something meaningful/useful.

Chimp, your photo service has been awesome! Incredibly easy to use, even for a computer ill-lit like me. Hopefully you'll find a way to continue it. Thanks!
