ANH Vader costume parts in ESB

I'm sure this is not news to GINO, but it was new news to me.

I remember seeing a photo someone had taken in the ILM Archives of what looked like an ANH Vader chest box except it was all dressed up to look like an ESB/ROTJ version.

Looking at all the WONDERFUL HD screencaps that Darth Kahnt made available I noticed Vader wearing a chestbox with ANH rods and his belt boxes look like ANH as well.

I can only guess that they decided that those old, cruddy looking leftover ANH costume parts would work for the stunt version of the costume. I was curious if that was Bob Anderson wearing those parts and David Prowse in the correct ESB versions.

Maybe that's why we never see any ANH Vader stuff on display at ILM or on tour.

If that is ANH stuff, I wonder if it was the original hero pieces, the Kermit stuff, or tour suit parts.

Interesting, I never noticed the ANH style rods before until you pointed it out.

I guess they might have just used old ANH rods on a made-for-ESB chest box.

What about the belt? ANH or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

Now that we are talking about ANH style stuff seen in ESB: In the Hoth charge, Vader is wearing a helmet with an oddly positioned dome and ANH style chin vent.

It's the same belt that you see Dave wearing throughout the movie. The buckle differs from ANH aswell as the box mesh and buttons.

a bigger photo...

It's possible they reworked an ANH box...I don't think the belt is at all ANH except the boxes themselves seem about the right size....

Gadzooks. well spotted on the rods James.

I wouldn't be too suprised if ANH belts boxes were re-used somewhere among the new suits for ESB, but most photos seem to suggest the rectangles cut for the mesh in ANH and the tubing in ESB are different sizes and in different places so maybe not?

Wow, good eye James. Glad to see that the HD caps I provided lead to you making this wonderful discovery. Very interesting. makes the time I spent doing those caps well worth it.

I agree with Thomas in that it does not look like an ANH belt to me with the exception of maybe the boxes.

Here is that short inner cape thing:

And speaking of, this was discussed on another fourm- what is the deal with Vaders helmet here.

Is this the helmet that was given to Don Post to make molds from?

The lower vent looks ANH to me .

I see the ESB belt boxes were just as scratched up in the corners as ANH.

Interesting detail between the buckle and the left box, the snap on the belt....

Notice how on the ESB stunt Vaders helmet (dome) is sitting strangly, like it's been twisted to his right.

And the Hoth Vader has an ANH face, and that dome is tilted way to far forward making the rear of the dome sit too high, this gives the illusion of a short dome, it's not short I'm sure.

Yeah, I agree, but I remember those fiberglass Don Post helmets having a high sitting dome as well. I wonder if that particular helmet (or mold) was the one given to Don Post to produce those helmets.

it may be lighting but in the above helmet shot if you look below and to the right of the chin vent you see a small round indent like a washer shape... now in other opening shots of anh you can see the same mark/shape.

when doin my anh helmet i included that mark as part of my detailing list

Now.. Whould someone please listen to me when i have pointed out it is impossible to say accurate to ANH, ESB or ROTJ..

I always said if your going for an accurate suit go for one SCREEN SHOT. Dont say i want accurate to ESB or other version.

I am sorry to say but it is so sad when people are talking about accuracy in a way there is only one answer.

I have always said its a variaty of versions.

And when someone makes a big point if there is a satin lining or not in the robe... Well...
The robe looks 200% better with lining than without. Also making it without is VERY dificult if your to maintain the design.

I do not belive the original robe is without lining.
For people who are seamstress lining is 100% cheper and 200% less time consuming.

Why?

Well with lining you sow the fabric in a fram shape to the lining.

Without lining well:
1. You need to fold the material.
2. You need a different cut,
3. You need to use special sowingmachine to make the edges sown in correctly.
4. If you dont want the seamlines to go trough the material it will take you allot more time and the proccess it VERY time consuming.

For any seamstress there is just NO LOGIC that the robe did not have a lining.

And for costume design there is no reason or logic to do it this way when they could have done other visible details far better.
