ANH Pyro X-Wing References - Mainly: Red 6 Search

Pilot figure is slowly taking shape, but honestly... I'm getting worried about being able to sculpt the face in that small scale. I need some other sculpting material than Apoxie Sculpt. I've found another two-part sculpting compound that I may check out for the detailing and sculpting the face. The body is nearly done. Gonna work on the arms.

I was thinking of doing the pilot figure in other scales as well... but with the difficulty in doing things in this size... I can only imagine how insane the sculptors doing smaller must be... insanely talented.

Red 5 is JACKED. There are all sorts of strange things going on - milky plastic stubs projecting from the Saturn 5 cans that I bet were a last ditch effort to get the wings opened and closed for the film (as it was filmed from behind), grub screws to keep the wings closed (you see these same screws on Hero Red 3), bent nails inside the wing mechanism where that rubber band was... it's a hot mess. I bet it was literally unfilmable from certain angles at the time of Empire, so they HAD to go with another Hero at their disposal - and it happened to be Red 3. You see it in that Lucas '83 photo from behind... wonder if those weird front artifacts were there at that point?

Here's an intentionally horridly tweaked pic illustrating the weirdness:

Thats true Jason, the wing "L" brackets have bent screws fitted in there as some kind of hook, for that rubber band maybe, really nasty stuff.

As for the full size ships in Empire they have the red 5 wing markings. As for the shot of lucas surrounded by the models The x in front of lucas has red 4 markings on the wings but other parts indicate red 5 . In total there are 6 x wings in that shot , but only 2 are identifiable due to light conditions. The armature with wings Lee was talking about is also present on the floor with tags on but i cant quite read them. Theres even one model from Raiders im there.

Yeah, that armature in the making of ESB book is not Red 5, I think. Red 5 still has a semblance of laser cannons attached... that one on the shelf doesn't seem to have as much meat on it's bones, so to speak.

I wonder if that's what remains of Red 1!! No one has pinpointed what happened to Red 1, right? Or did it "walk" like the TIE Killer Y?

That armature in the making of esb can be seen here on the bench(bottom left) Notice the 3 other birds on the floor behind the b-wing all with wings closed. Seem a lot smaller

Never noticed the armature !

I think the X-Wings with closed wings behind the B-Wing are MPC X-Wing, just compare the size to the Taun-Taun. And it wouldn't make sense because there're Red 5 (4) and Red 3 on this pic, this means there're only 2 more hero (Red 2 and Red Leader).

Guys, I know I was one of the guys saying the X-Wing used for the Dagobah scene was Red 3 but now I doubt.

If you look closely at the back of the wing ramps you'll notice that the weathering matches perfectly Red 5.

There're also some weird things on the remains of Red 5 : the airfix cans was obviously removed for some reason then put back. But they changed the styrene plate on which the saturn cans is glued, this styrene plate is unpainted now, so white. Why ?

Maybe they used the cans of Red 3 which were cut for the landing gears and used them on Red 5.

That's just an idea, but there are so weird things... Why Red 5 cans were removed then put back and fixed with new styrene ? Why they put a system to keep the wings closed ? Why the weathering of the wings matches Red 5 while it's Red that has the landing gear (including nose gear) ?

I'm in trouble now...

Hmm, i think i was way off, Jason, you may be spot on there, that could very well be Red Leader's armature, the engine light tubing, at least how i saw it in Chronicles, seems to match up?
It cant be Red 5, as she's in the same pic, nor Red 3 for obvious reasons, and Red 2 is still ticking......id never noticed this armature in the shot before......but yeah, you guys compare to the armature shot in Chronicles, see what you think.

Oh NOOO!! Red 1!! My poor sweet Red 1, what did they do to you...? Rest easy, my darling, rest easy my sweet girl...

Could bring a tear to a glass eye if thats the case Colin, she's always been my passion X wing wise.....well, if it is her, least we found her thanks to Simon pointing out the armature.

Sorry Julien, just unfounded speculation really, not meaning to tease. We KNOW the Red 3 mods were done for *a* landed scene. If not Hoth...then Bespin? I don't have my copy handy to check; can't recall what we see on screen. :(

I.e. were both Red 3 AND Red 5 modified similarly?

If only there were more good production pics from the Empire and Jedi modelshops for the older models, eh?

Martyn, if you mean, was Red 5 modified in the can dept, for landing gear, then no, the original cans remain today, but, yes with that white styrene plate Julien spoke of, but to my eye, even the evidence of the new styrene...the removal of a can from Red 5, seems to be from the upper wing, not the lower though.

It's really underwhelming at this stage, as I've currently only concentrated on general proportions and then started work on the face and helmet yesterday evening. Excuse the gaping hole in his stomach, but I had accidentally made him way too fat, so I ground that away and plan to add the bulk when doing the detailing instead.

Whoever makes these figures with this amount of detail are clearly insanely talented.

Thanks for the info, Lee.

Carsten - yep. Have a look at the Brick Works figures by Kow Yokoyama, they're amazing. I have no idea how they do it. It's hard enough sculpting in 1:1.
