ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Just scored an MGC as well! Should be to me shortly. Now, it has the 9mm grips which I need to replace. Am I correct in thinking the MGC grip frame is still oversized vs. a real mauser? So, to make my real mauser grips fit, I'll have to remove metal like I did for the Denix?

Congrats on the MGC score! :love:thumbsup

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

My MGC mauser has arrived and I can't say enough about how cool it is. This is so much like owning a genuine mauser that I'm giddy.

Yes, obviously it doesn't fire anything. And yes, it's not made of high-quality steel like a real firearm. But this thing replicates a mauser so closely. Mine came with seven dummy rounds which the gun will chamber, feed and eject. The feeding sticks a bit, but it's still a fun effect. Safety switch works. Magazine bottom plate comes off like the real deal. And, you can field strip it like a real gun. Plus the fit and finish are much better than my Denix.

I probably paid too much for this MGC, but I have no regrets. Now I need to start working on the frame to make my mauser grips fit.

I know everyone has seen an MGC, but I can post pics if anyone's interested?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I don't mind...other than being reminded of how unlikely it is that I will ever own one.:lol
I like pictures.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

OK.

I have since found 2 more rounds on the floor. :lol So it came with 9 dummy rounds.

The patina of it is very aged, which I like. Not sure if I can protect that completely with the mods to come.

One of the worst areas on a Denix looks much better here.

Wrong grips, but my wooden replacement grips will work with some mods to the frame.

Partial field strip. As far as I've gone with it. Nervous about it. I would like to tighten up the safety switch. It works, but it's a bit loose.

Nice! Pretty cool that it has the Mauser markings too.

Now all you've gotta do is build up the nerve to start a little filing and cutting on that nice clean MGC. ;)

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I'll probably start tonight. I really want to see it with the correct wooden grips in place. Heft wise, I think it's a little heavier than the Denix. I don't have a scale that would be accurate enough to tell the difference.

Now, I'll bet I won't get much selling a partially stripped Denix with modified grip frame, without any grips? I wonder if I should find some of the previously available parts to make a TESB blaster? Or just put it in the junkyard as is? I've kind of overshot my spending limit on blasters with this project and I am still hopeful I'll snag a genuine scope some day. So probably best to take in a little cash instead of spending even more. That rapid swooshing sound you hear is my wife vigorously nodding in agreement. :lol

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Very nice! Those markings make it even cooler. Wonder at what point they stopped doing that? Two things suck about those mgc's and you already know what they are. Grip/trigger and barrel thickness.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

So, barrel thickness? It will still be possible to machine the barrel down to fit the new bull barrel, right? Pretty sure Lichtbringer was machining an MGC. As long as it can handle that, it will be fine. Grip size I can fix. Trigger? You mean the shape or the pull? It's rounder than the Denix trigger. Not sure it's accurate to the real deal.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I believe he said be very careful, or it will shatter. The trigger is the wrong shape and has a pin through it. I posted a pic of the real deal a few posts up.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Hope everyone here on the east coast has fared through the storm ok! :thumbsup

Here in VA everything seems to have made it through well enough.

OK, that's what I thought. I don't have a lathe, but was planning to chuck the upper in a large drill press and carefully file it down to size. Doesn't spin as fast as a lathe. As to trigger shape, I'll probably leave it. Not sure yet. Now, I wonder if I strip it all the way down, can a real Mauser replacement trigger be weaked to work on an MGC? Probably not.

Nor sure what i said without rereading it (cause i say so much i can´t remember all :lol) - but i assume that what a machinist calls "shatter" wasn´t my main concern. That kind of "shatter" happens when a not rigid enough machine (mini lathe) is used with a to big tool and/or the wrong feed in any direction, then the small toolpost is flexing down and grabbing again, several times a second - not good.

In mainly all turning processes on this gun the upper receiver will be chucked on it´s barrel frontpart, and stabilized with a living center in the tailstock in the hole for the bolt on the rear end. Due to that the most of the receiver is not chucked firmly.

Be carefull and don´t use to much rounds per minute, and with MGCs with a massive barrel all should go fine. But there are also MGCs with a bore, so the barrel is a tube, if that get´s machined to thin it can be thrown out of the lathe due to the rounds per minute - maybe against the wall behind the machine, maybe against your chest or head. It can be done, just not with faith and fun, you should know what you do and where the danger is.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks. If it starts to look too daunting, I can always cut it flush and add the post for attaching the bull barrel. Plan to go very slow and cautious.

That´s always the best way.

Check on both ends of your barrel if it´s hollow, and if not you maybe want to cut it a few cm from the muzzle/half way. If it´s massive there, it should be massive all over the full length.

I will see if i can find/show a way to turn/file it on a drillpress, more or less safely. It may take some days, as i´m pretty busy atm.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I haven't stripped it completely to look through the barrel. Will do that at some point.
