Anh Escape Pod Research Thread

I hope the vintage is the correct one....do you know where you saw those scans, Q?

James,
The Howitzer I was talking about was the one below. I was able to buy it after all. However, I'm not so sure about the Howitzer lending parts for the Escape Pod after all.

I would, however, appreciate a confirmation that this particular Carrier was used as a donor. To my knowledge, Aurora used the same molds for the various boxed 1/48 Carriers. If anybody knows for sure, please let me know. After that, I only have to worry about the kit I have coming being complete. We'll see.

Joe

Will this Carrier work for the Escape Pod?

I don't have that one as yet, so I'm only 99% sure it's on there! ;)

There are at least 18 parts from it on the EP. The four triangular frames (the ones that hook over the 8Rad parts) in between the main engines, and fourteen hexagonal 'knobs': two each on the Sealab frames, and two on each of the three small thrusters around the engine section.

Hehe! I hear ya!

Well, I hope it's complete.....the seller said he believed it to be complete but wasn't 100%. If it is, I'll definitely drop certain bits in silicone rubber once I get a chance.

The vintage box looks like this,

I'll add some scans of the kit parts when I can find my one. I put it in the stash and it's disappeared!!! :lol

Cheers, John

i THOUGHT it was vintage? lol
its the Pkw.K1 (type 82) Kubelwagen. Kubelwagen Type82 w/German Field Military Police (Plastic model) Tamiya 1/35 Scale Limited
I have scans of it, and clearly see its not it. But I swear I saw the scans to the correct kit -- then (i suppose mistakenly) connected it to this K1-type 82. Can't retrace/remember how I got from good pt. A, to bad pt. C??

on a similar note...regarding the "holed" material under the kubelwagen door. i've noticed some of that type appear in gemini kits. on the kit i noticed, the holes are gridded up (and not sawtooth-patterned like on the pod), but its at least idea to broaden our scope when looking for that donor.

I looked at my 1/24 Gemini....no match....unless I'm missing a part...hmmm.

I started to suspect the Flakpanzer Gepard hull...maybe ILM drilled through the holes. But, no, it doesn't match.

So, I received two vintage Kubelwagens and they are indeed the correct parts above the holey panels. Hoorah!

Oh, and I received the 8" Howitzer and M8 Carrier and like JD said.....99% was spot on! Hehe! :lol Unfortunately, my suspicion about the half-round tubes under the Centurion part was off.

Joe,
have you checked the "dish" shape of that gemini against the "top" of the excape pod? i know a while back somebody thought "the UFO" kit might be it, but that didn't pan out...so was hoping that gemini may be it?

Roger that, Q. I checked after seeing that posted a while back. I looked for evidence of raised panel lines on the E.Pod ref pics but could not find any. I will say it looks close in shape. Matter of fact, I'll pull that kit out tonight and check it again...take some pics and all.

Joe

(as jason illustrated), i think the best trick is compare the dome to the fruehauf tanker "lid" - to get a sense if its the right size

Doh! Can't remember if I compared the size of those two parts ("dome" and Fruehauf dish). I'll double check on that.
Joe

So, it turns out my kit isn't complete after all. However, I do have the part that looks like the area in question. At 35mm in height, it is too tall compared to the SS model and too small in circumference for the Fruehauf dish.

I think the larger instrument-bay section from the Gemini would be a better bet. It's also too tall, but that just means you could cut what you needed from it. The one thing that recommends it is that the angle is pretty much spot on.

It may be a wild goose chase in any event, as the section looks to have been clad in styrene sheet like the rest of the model, so the same applies as to the paint buckets: nice to know exactly what was used, but not 100% necessary if you can size it from other factors.

I wonder about a kit-part holding up to multiple takes of the launch shot anyway. They may have taken a bit more trouble on that section, particularly as it also holds a mounting point. There's an interesting reference to it in the 'Star Wars Sketchbook' from 1977: "The back end of the pod was hollowed out and the front weighted to keep it nose-heavy and falling straight."

Hey everyone have had a break for while to catch up on bills... Interesting about the weighting. Must have been for the launch shots where we see Grant holding the Pod in the launch tube set. Ill have to get that book. I will go through what Ive missed & make any adjustments or updates to the maps.

JD posted a picture of a front fender section from a UPC 1/40 Honest John Rocket & Launcher kit that is a very close match for the unidentified parts on the hatch.
Its so close but just a little small.
From that I have done some research on the launch vehicle which is a International 5 Ton M289 Cargo Truck.
In my search I came across a site that lists with pictures all Military Vehicles.
Great reference site.
Anyway most US Cargo Trucks have a distinctive squared whhel arch front & rear.
The older trucks & some other randoms have rounded wheel arches thoungh 'most' have the squared arches that are seen on the hatch part.
Its a good start.
There have never been any 1/35 scale Honest John kits made.
I believe what we are looking for is a 1/35 scale US Cargo Truck.
Attached is the link to the Militarty site where you can see the different vehicles.

MILITARY MEDIUM TRUCKS

Also attached is JD's reference picture.
Hope we're getting closer to finding this part.....
