ANH & ESB Vader - almost done! updated 6.10.09 -glove pics post #177

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Well seeing that ANH is behind in the vote I'll have to put in my choice of ANH (not surprisingly). :)

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Another one for ANH, but I'd like to hear why.

ANH=4, ESB=6

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Interesting.
I like the widow's peak too, but I hate the inner robes over the armor.

.

Ive often wondered if you have ever wanted to see an "idealized" yet accurate ANH? Meaning a combo of the glossy armor, lights/boxes, and robes from ESB but with an ANH polished and clean helmet?

I know you wouldnt want anything in your displays that wasnt 110% accurate :angel But I just wondered if the thought ever crossed your mind.

When I first heard confirmation of Vader being in ep3 thats what I thought it would be... unfortunately it ended up being WAY worse. :sick

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Never crossed my mind. :lol

For some reason I don't really like the way a glossy version of the ANH helmet looks. Probably because it's not something that ever existed on screen and just looks wrong when someone paints an ANH helmet up that way. Now had they kept the widow's peak and small chin vent in place for ESB and just gave it a better paint job, then I might be singing a different tune now.

However...
If I had to take all my favorite elements (as they appeared on screen) from all three film versions of costumes and put them together it would go like this.

Start with the entire ESB costume, then...
1. replace the ESB cape with the ROTJ cape (and hook in the armor).
2. replace the ESB gloves with the ANH gloves
Most of the ROTJ stuff is the ESB stuff anyway.

Now, the ANH Vader with the inner robe under the chest armor looks pretty cool. I could get down with that.

Like the original ANH Vader suit shown here at 76 worldcon.

I do like the ESB, but have to say the ANH is my choice.

The ESB shows Vader as a 'Lord' in his shiny glory, but prefer the ANH as it depicts Vader getting stuck in and not having the time to polish himself all day:)

Awesome displays(y)thumbsup

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Actually Darth Jones made an idealized ANH helmet which looks interesting.

Vader in ESB is certainly just as everyone here has said....and in many ways it is a better costume than the ANH costume. But to me the ANH Vader is just more raw and mean and battle-worn. In ESB he is always nice and comfortable on his star destroyer :lol. In ANH he looks like he just came back from another battle. The helmet has always been the focal point for me and although the ESB helmet is "beautiful", the ANH helmet has that point on the widow's peak, the dome sits lower and the face is beat up. There is a history and richness in the mask of ANH, whereas the ESB mask is just simply a highly polished and finished mask. Someone here mentioned the amber lenses on the ANH mask and I agree that they give an added measure of intimidation, as if the face behind the mask is seething with rage...the whole effect to me is like a combination of an angry insect face and a skull. Vader in ANH on the Death Star was less appealing because of how the costume was worn, but on the Tantive IV and during the attack on the Death Star I think he looked amazing. Plus I personally think that the inner robe should go over the armor. The cape and robes are the Sith Lord's outer garments and to me they should then serve to cover the armor, although that is debatable...although even Jedi during the clone wars would wear their cloak over their armor. Vader can't wear a cloak because of his helmet. So in short I think the ESB suit looks great and is in keeping with Vader being given greater command, but the ANH suit to me seems more realistic and more in keeping with the "used universe" idea than a perfectly maintained suit.

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

So is that another vote for ANH? :lol

Yes, please clarify. This is serious business and I don't want any hanging chads in the end when this is over. :p

Thanks for your viewpoint Thomas. I agree with a lot of what you are saying, and I think almost all of those reasons are why I wanted to do the ANH style in the first place, even if I don't prefer it over the ESB/ROTJ.
I like the part about it fitting in with the 'used look' of the SW universe and the whole seen many battles aesthetic.

ANH=6, ESB=6 (assuming DN chose ANH)

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Interesting.
I was starting to wonder if all the ANH love was gone.
I like the widow's peak too, but I hate the inner robes over the armor.

ANH=3, ESB=6

.

Definitely Gino. The one single thing i hate about ANH is the Robe over
the armor

Now if the Helmet was correctly positioned on top of the armor instead of
below, this would have looked cool in the movie..

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Doh! Double Doh!!!! you beat me to it, Gino lol :D
we were definitely thinking the same thing here ;)

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Here's a shot of ANH next to ESB.

Which is the better look, the gritty-ness of the ANH, or the refined polished of ESB?
Which is your fav and why?

Okay, GINO, after staring at them side-by-side for about 10 minutes, here is what I've come up with. And I'm afraid you're not gonna like my answer, because it is a bit wishy-washy. Sorry.

If you were gonna give me my choice to display in my home, my own personal taste would cause me to go for the ANH version. Why? ANH was the first SW movie I saw, and I remember like it was just yesterday, him coming through the door into the rebel ship. When I picture Vader in my mind, I picture him in ANH. The memories I have of him in that first film are ultra-vivid, and looking at your uncanny recreation of him evokes those feelings, and transports me back to that summer of '77.

However, same scenario, i.e. you were gonna give me my choice to display in my home...my interest in impressing my non-SW-geek friends might cause me to select the ESB version. Cooler chestbox, blacker eye lenses, shinier armor, more chest armor showing--this is definitely the more glamorous version that would elicit bigger "oooohs" and "ahhhhhs" from non-SW-geeks (which virtually all of my local friends are anyway).

On the one hand, if I got the ANH, it would not only thrill me personally, but it would also impress others. It just wouldn't impress them as much as the ESB version would, by a significant margin.

On the other hand, if I got the ESB, my visitors would be blown away by it more than they would the ANH version, and I would personally be very happy with it, because I love it also. I just don't love it as much as the ANH version, by a significant margin.

So there you have it. I can't decid.........................oh frak that! Put me down for the ANH! The Hell with my visitors!

The Wook

ps~I haven't had this hard a choice since my "Seven of Nine or Number Six" thread.

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Wook, that is my thoughts to the T! Made me laugh cause thats exactly the line of thought I went through! You just went into more detail. :lol

Its like when you show somebody who "loves" SW an accurate trooper bucket. The first thing they say is well... "the real ones were nicer than this! Why is the right eye like that?"

I think the ANH alone would get so many of those comments, that if I put all the time effort and money that G has... well it would really tick me off to have to explain how awesome it was!

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Hmmm.
Well I suppose I don't share those concerns because I've never cared what my non prop friends think about my collection (because they are clueless). I have to make them with my desires in mind or 1. I wouldn't have the motivation to keep working on them for so long, or 2. wouldn't be satisfied with them when they were done.
Most of the time, my non prop friends get a kick out of the stories that come with explaining that the helmet was brush painted, or that there were bumps/texture on the trooper helmets, or that's a real ww2 nazi pouch??
"This is what they were really like? Just like this??"
"Yep. See this here?"
"No way, it totally was. I can't believe I never noticed that."

ANH=8, ESB=6

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

I was speaking in general. I think more people are gonna be impressed with ESB because it is pretty. I'm ANH all the way because it's a more realistic representation. It looks used. Looks less like a costume.

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

I would go for the ESB look because of the way the outfit is presented in the movie. I prefer to draw him as an ESB or ROTJ Vader . One Bcause of my storyline. It happens after the events of ROTJ with a twist. Vader survives but ends up in our galaxy.

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

I go for ANH.
The Tantive IV scene is the first and still that had me from the first 'till now.
The look + Prowse's gesture when interrogating leia is my moment of choice from Eps IV:thumbsup

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

I agree with alot of what The Wook said.
ANH is my favorite look because it reflects the feeling of all 1977 promos and artwork. And Vader striding through the blockade runner's hallways is just breathtaking every time.

But the ESB version costume is undoubtedly better made. The components are more finished looking than the ANH Vader and it has chestbox lights etc. And Vader does some badass stuff in ESB too.

They are almost even for different reasons but 1977 nostalgia wins out.

So another for ANH here.:cool

Re: ANH & ESB Vader - almost done!

Right on Wook. :D

ESB has always been my favorite, but if I were going to do an ANH
version, I think I would go for the look of the 76 worldcon pic Gino just
posted.. That ANH Vader still brings you back to the momment that Vader
stepped on screen, yet it flows way better like the way the suit is in
ESB

Ummmmm, Now ROTJ? I like it, but I will never make a suite in that version
simply because it's way too shiny for my taste lol ;D
