As far as my reasoning...

Seeing ESB is my first memory of going to a movie. I was about 4 at the time. It will always hold that special place in my heart.

As far as Vader, I feel like in ANH he was just Tarkin's lackey. I feel the same about ROTJ, just the Emperor's foreman. However, in ESB he was his own man, er machine. He was after something and didn't care what it took to get it. He whooped up on poor old Luke and tortured Han Solo. So put down a check in the ESB column for me.

I was just watching ESB last night while punching hair on my yoda and was thinking about some of the points brought up here.

I think that when you strip everything else away, the reason I like Vader as a character in ESB was because he was so "dynamic" literally.
He physically moved around a lot. His movements were quick, direct, intentional, and aggressive.
He just seemed very unrestricted in the suit compared to the other movies where most of the time he just stood around.
Watching the saber duel, he gave us a believable sword fight.
And I love when he walks really fast down the corridors in hoth and in bespin after the duel.

Can I instead tell it to Admiral Ozzel, Captain Needa, a truly frightened Lando Calrissian, his command over the motely crew of Bounty Hunters and his dismembering of his own son? Yes, Vader was not a badass until ESB.

I guess torturing young women and strangling Imperial officers doesn't count as "badass" if Peter Cushing is your boss.

Technically he was a badass when he mowed down all those children way back in ROTS so the timeline for his "badness" got started fairly earlier than either ANH or ESB...

I think I like the way the ANH costume moves. Even if it is a bit Frankenstein.
The ESB Vader costume looks awesome when he strides around and fights Luke. The best the Vader costume ever looks in the whole trilogy IMO is when he is telling Luke "You are beaten. It is useless to resist!"
But I still chose the ANH costume because I love the way Vader looks on the Blockade Runner and there is a certain amount of retro coolness about the '77 Star Wars that puts it on top in my book.
