Anakin Skywalker Glove Modifications

So I'm sure everyone has seen the cheap $12 Anakin Skywalker costume glove. I'm sure some of you, just as I did, bought it and expected it to look even close to the picture. Well it didn't!

But have no fear, I have done a few modifications to it that are cheap and easy, that will give you that movie style glove you hoped for in the first place.

What you'll need:

Anakin Skywalker Glove ($12.00 @ Amazon.com) you might be able to find it even cheaper, but the closer it gets to halloween, the more expensive it will get.

Krylon "Hammered" Black Spray Paint ($3.75 @ Home Depot) It says it will cover and stick to anything, and it does.

Rubber Ribbed Floor Runner ($2.09 @ Homedepot) This is a rubber floor runner found in the flooring department, usually used in entry ways etc. It is sold by the foot, which is plenty of material needed.

Needle and Black Thread (Any sewing store, I suggest a thinner needle so that you don't rip the glove material.)

Seam Ripper (Found at any sewing store)

Super Glue ($2.00 @ K-Mart or Homedepot) I suggest you get the liquid kind, not the gel or brush.

What to do:

1) Use the seam ripper and remove the three bands that wrap around the glove.

2) Use the seam ripper to remove the buckles from the bands as well.

3) Once you have removed the buckles you will need to re-sew the the three bands according to the width of your own arm, !!!!Remember!!!! This glove is supposed to be worn over the sleeve of your tunic so there should be some slack in it, don't make it tight to your arm.

4) Re-attach the bands back onto the glove, minus the buckles. These can be reattached later using some needle nose pliers.

5) Once you have reattached the bands (I added a few stiches in the back of each for extra support and strength) you will now add the Ribbed Rubber Material. This is easy to cut with a pair of scissors. Cut each piece according to the width to cover that ugly shiny material on each band. (Usually 4 ribs wide)

6) Attach the rubber with Super Glue, don't rush. Slowly work your way around the entire band ensuring to work in the Super Glue everywhere to ensure that the rubber stays on the material. When you get to the end, just simply cut off the excess. Now move on to the other remaining bands.

7) Now it's time to paint!!!! I actually put on a latex glove and a trash bag up my arm to protect it. I put the glove on and then painted it while wearing it to ensure that the glove didn't get stiff as the paint dried. It dries to the touch between 15-30 minutes, so if you have patients, the payoff is worth it.

8) Make sure to spray everywhere, and in between fingers. Allow to dry to the touch before removing, then the glove should stand up on a piece of cardboard on it's own. Allow it to dry overnight.

9) Once it's fully dry you can re-attach your buckles using your needle nose pliers and a little patients. Slip the C ring through the loops on the bands and then line them back up with the holes in the buckles, using the pliers to squeeze the C ring back into the holes of the buckles.

BOOM YOU'RE DONE!!!!

I was really happy with the way it turned out, and suprised that the paint looks as good as it does. It was really a last ditch effort, but I figured it would be cheaper then trying to make a real leather glove, or having it made. I really looks and feels like a leather glove, and I personally think it looks close to, if not exactly like to movie version.

I'm thinking about touching up my buckles with a little silver spray paint so they really stand out from the black glove.

Let me know if this helps, or what you think.

I don't know how you got away with it, but I'd generally recommend people not use spray paints on vinyl. every time I've done it, I end up with sticky colored vinyl. Looks like yours worked out well though (which really messes with my head), good job!

Yeah I was actually kind of suprised myself. This was a last ditch effort because I was so disappointed with the glove that I received, and how much it didn't look like the one I thought I was getting. It worked really well and if you use the paint that I did, I don't see a problem with repeat good results.
