An RPF Open Source 5 ft Millennium Falcon Build/Reference Thread. All Are Welcome

Upper left gas can is from Bandai 1/24 M60, I believe. It's definitely larger than a 1/35 tank.
I'm not sure that's a gas can. It looks like this one to me. 1/35 Tamiya Leopard A4.

If I can find the circle part on the Joe Johnston plate, the top section will be finished.

The Morser Karl came out in 1976, and I would be very surprised if that greeblie was an ESB refit -- here's why: I'm fairly confident that this piece was "actually" (i.e., not symbolically or aesthetically) an air vent to allow outside air to be pulled into the model which would then get sucked through the muffin fans to cool off the inside during the halogen light filming scenes. There are a few reference pictures that seem to indicate as much, showing a very dark recess underneath the grill that suggests it is not only a greeblie but an actual "working element" of the model.

Ahh, well when you said Anzio Annie I thought that didn't come out till 78 but I just looked it up, I was wrong, they were both available in 76. It's odd that they don't really show up on models until Empire, well Star Wars models.

Yeah, I am not in front of my kits right now, but in my notes it says either/or, as if the vent greeblie is available in both kits, and I don't actually remember, but either way I'd be keen to have your opinion on my theory that this vent greeblie actually covered a real hole that was directly underneath the upper engine vents, to allow for air to pass through the model from bottom to top, in addition to the airflow from front to back of the ship, via the Koolshade covering the holes around the cockpit tube, which would also let a lot of air in.

I looked at a couple sets of the Annie and still didn't see the piece. I even looked through two different sets of instructions. Who knows.

As far as the vent, this pic shows a little better angle. Not sure if there is a hole under there.

FWIW - the last two parts you've been talking about were Definitively ESB add-ons, neither that gas can like part or the round vent were present for ANH. (one of the best public references is the Color Crayola box pic (in Chronicles) - pretty much nails those parts not there). Remember, the Chronicles B&W pics were taken AFTER filming of ANH - so you're finding a number of parts that were post ANH when you use those references. Just depends which Falcon you want to build.

Thanks Sean.

Oh, interesting! That picture doesn't "totally" satisfy or prove the point, but it satisfies my curiosity, and certainly makes the case that it was not used as an air vent hole, which, if it was, I would think the "insert" part would be snugged flush to the body panel, whereas this pic shows it sitting proud of the surface as if there is nothing underneath it but solid plastic. That's a nice angle, and very helpful.

Sean, thanks too for your insights -- I didn't know this was definitely an ESB refit, as I had presumed the "origin date" of the kit argument was the only factor. I wonder "why" they added it? Is it possible there was a hole there (for airflow), and that they covered it up with the round vent greeblie for an underside filming shot (the Bespin take-off/landing sequence?). Because it doesn't seem like either a "blank area that needs filling" or like a "greeblie that fell off needs replacing" area, but again I don't know what it looked like before, during ANH, unless it was simply a blank piece of sytrene in this area.

Yes, I think you're right. In the pictures I have, it looks like the whole bottom half of the wing was used, with some trimming.
