For whatever else is going on, don't read too much into the "Make Offer to Owner" button on the Heritage website -- this is a standard program they've had on their site for many years. If you miss an item you really wanted, they have software in place where you can make an offer to buy it from whoever bought it in their auction -- the "profit margin" is pre-programmed (can't remember the percentage), and the buyer is of course free to refuse any offers that he deems too low. This is a part of virtually all Heritage auctions, so it's not part of some grand conspiracy here.

Thanks for the clarification.

At this point, do we even know if it WAS Ron Shanko?

He messaged me directly upon signing up, which is what initially brought this to my attention. He stated who he was and his previous boardname and that he had been banned. I suppose it could be someone else, but didn't seem like it.

I do not know him nor have ever knowingly communicated with him before. His ban isn't due to anything he said in this thread, but because he was a previously banned member.

Thanks for the clarification! At least that's one thing in this thread that's a little less unclear now!

Showing up out of nowhere was an accident then, and he only tried to confuse the issue. Not much help. And very suspicious.

I think we can safeley take any of his statements with a grain of salt that would crush a mammoth.

This has been a heck of a roller coaster. At this point, do we even know if it WAS Ron Shanko? I mean,if it wasn't, that would explain referring to himself in the third person.... Except that is apparently something he has been known to do, so maybe or was him...

I'm beginning to wonder if I am who I think I am. Or was. Or whatever.

The methods and writing style fit his patterns.

At the end of the day, I think we can agree that none of us would want to see someone take an expensive bath over a possible forgery, and the community as a whole would want to be sure about such an historic artifact. This should be about the truth, not interfering with auctions, boosting egos, etc.

Well said.

Just when I think this whole episode cannot get any worse, now RShanko comes up with an absolutely BASELESS theory about the possible origin of this thing, without a single SHRED OF PROOF? Seriously, WTF?!?!

I remember that guy from years ago at ASAP. He shot off his mouth all the damn time. He's a good craftsman, I'll give him that.

I have the smoking gun... I can screen match the HA phaser to an episode of Star Trek! You'll note that Kirk and Spock are holding mid grades--but McCoy, being closer to the camera, is holding the HA hero.

What is the Rudolph thread?
On the stop motion puppets sold last year at Profiles from Rankin Bass.

Shank you very much.

I think this thread has taken on a life of it's own and will just keep on growing and growing.

I would really hope that whoever bought it, if anyone even did, will eventually show it and release more pictures of it. Since HeroComm has come out and said it was the real deal, without saying why, and knew the other 3 experts, without naming them, we can only hope that they show more pictures on their site than just the auction photos. Since they have not done so before now leads me to believe we will never find out what made them change their minds and who these so called experts are. As I have stated in the past one of my biggest complaints with HeroComm has always been the secrecy but they at least went to great lengths to document things, something not done with this Phaser.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say something weird and unexpected will happen about this in a day or two.

If this were a plot to a movie or TV episode, then the price that was paid would THEN be followed by the truth (unlikely HERE in reality) that the phaser was real. You would then (in the movie) put the phaser back up for bids at the old SOLD price as the NEW starting price. The auction could then go higher the second time, than the first time. That would be the [fictional] plot in a movie.
