Aliens pulse rifle LED shot counter build information

Hey y'all,
One of my latest obsessions is the pulse rifle from Aliens. My main query is building an LED shot counter. I understand that somebody has made kits at one time, however I can't seem to find any leads on them. I'm game for building a unit using an arduino module.
Has anyone made one of these or can provide me with some links? Please share your expertise! I'd be super grateful.

i built my own using a MAX7219 chip and two 7 segment displays. There are plenty of code examples on the net for arduino if you want to DIY
