Have you thought about extending the barrel shroud on the carbine and making it something more akin to a designated marksman's rifle or light machine gun? I think there was something to that effect described in the Colonial Marines tech manual. The squad automatic weapon/LMG, I mean.
That's what I was thinking. If you did that you could use a longer shot gun and it would hold more ammo, but if you used a real shot gun, it would have to have an 18" barrel and it would be really long looking.

The one in the book (just a description and not a picture, unfortunately) is the M41AE2 and removed the shotgun. Presumably there was a bipod mount in it's place. It also is supposed to have an extended, L-shaped magazine capable of carrying 300 rounds, so triple-digit ammo counter.
