ALIEN (1979) motion tracker questions

Yeah, I just sat them on top to give an idea on what it should look like.

And actually there wouldn't be room for 6 because of the bracket used to hold on the scope. But you're right, there should be 5.

HA! Found the scanner. Thanks KC for the offer though.

So last night I did a quick prototype of a replica body using an off the shelf piece of tubing and a laser cut top. It's probably 3-4% smaller, I'd just about imagine you'd lose that much if I cast the entire thing anyhow.

I'm still waiting on getting the side mounts laser cut, but I'd imagine I can have those in a week.

Birdie had posted his first version on yourprops.com a long time ago... This version has since been replaced by the new (absolutely stunning) one :

Alien (1979), Functional Alien Tracker, other replicas

Now that I think about it, I don't really know if this version is his second one or an upgraded version of the former yourprops version...

Fred

Missed this :)

The second one was a completeley new build from scratch, the first one I put together back in the early noughties when I was was mainly active on the Aliens Legacy. The only accurate part was the Panasonic Ranger :lol

That build was around five years before Fred started this thread, and I sold it long ago.

This thread has been a brilliant example of RPF teamwork over the years, and this latest discovery is very exciting, I searched long and hard for this part (in completeley the wrong places) and got nowhere

Big thanks to Flix4me for finding it and Gregg for working so hard and quickly on replicating it :thumbsup

While molding the bottom of the scope, I also molded the knobs from the front of the Pioneer to see how they would look. The knobs are about 1/4" too long, so I had my CNC guy make me up a jig so I can bulk sand all 25 needed at the same time so they can be made flush and equal in height. They turned out perfectly. I am completely convinced that the knobs from the front of the Pioneer are in fact the knobs used on the top of the Motion Tracker.

Here is a photo with most of the knobs in place.

I'm quite happy with the progress. Now to get working on the viewfinder and ice cube tray.

It might be the different angle but I get the feeling that the original knobs are slightly smaller in diameter compared to the pioneer ones... although I would prefer to be wrong!

Oh...does anyone have any better pics of the lathed piece that sticks out of the front. On some versions there are two, on other versions there are only one. I think I'm going to do mine with two.

I've done some more work to MT#1 and MT#2. I'm waiting for the last bunch of laser cut parts for #3 to get it up to speed.

Also, if anyone is interested in Pioneer scope kits, let me know. I don't have graphics, but I can provide a hi res scan of the top if anyone wants them, and I'll be happy to do them for the price that someone jokingly suggested earlier.....I know...Junkyard...but really, who else but us is going to want these :)

A fiver? I'll take one!

Sorry, I couldn't do them for that with lights, but I'm sure lights could be added easily enough. I'll put a for sale thread up in the JY for them.

ORIGINAL GRILL FOUND

I identified the grills that can be seen on the motion tracker from Alien and since I've been told that I'm basically a freeloader, that I'm on this forum just to sell, that I do not "share" and that hence I would be better elsewhere... here's the information on the origin of the grills that are found on the original Alien motion tracker.

The original grills come from 1950's-1970's "ELIZABETHAN" tape recorders from United Kingdom. Since there is so many models of this brand, and many do not have the correct grills, I made a detailed list where I noted down the year of production and the presence of the correct grill (lots and lots of ebay browsing and a couple of collectors' websites have been the source of information). The list is not complete but it will save you a lot of time wasted on aimless "70's plastic grill" searches on ebay.
Keep in mind that the motion tracker also shows a "longer" vent grill (20cm) and I have not yet identified which model does this come from, if anyone wants to keep browsing on ebay searching the models that I have yet not found it might be eventually discovered.
