Alice in Wonderland's Red knight aka Queen's card soldier

Hi all -

first off I want to say THANK YOU. I've had this thread open on my computer for the last 4 weeks straight, using your photos and ideas as models.

A few friends wanted to do an Alice-themed halloween, and I decided I'd finally get off my butt and make a costume from scratch this year. I wanted to make a card knight, and knew it shouldn't be TOO hard, but couldn't really think of what material to use or where to start.

+100 to the person who suggested Craft Foam. Michaels' Crafts in the US and also Hobby Lobby sell it in Red, although both stores carry a slightly different shade (I found this out halfway through when I ran out of foam). I've used 3mm foam for the whole costume, and since there is so much overlapping I haven't had any structural issues. Also, hot glue makes this stuff bond almost instantly and once it does you aren't getting it apart unless you rip it and ruin both pieces - just FYI.

Anyway, I wish I'd taken pictures along the way, but here's my finished result:

The effect I really wanted to go for was the "rusty/weathered" look that you can clearly see in all the movie screenshots above. To achieve this - (super simple) - I used a paint-pen (sharpie makes them, but every store has a house brand. it's a felt-tip and a barrel of paint that just saturates the tip when you 'pump' it).
Draw a thin line around the outside of each piece and quickly take a finger and smudge/smear it in random streaks. It gives the perfect 'dirty smudge' look for a rusty-old-metal effect.

The helmet I lucked out - I found a "sparta" helmet and faceplate at a costume shop for $8, sprayed it red and glued foam to the front. It was simple enough to cut the rectangle for the eyes, and then mount some red LED Xmas lights to either side of the eyes. Added bonus: when the lights are on it creates more shadow around MY eyes, making me harder to see!

The back of the costume is currently drying. I found a reasonably large floral/fleur-de-lis stencil and used it for the back pattern. Not quite as intricate as the movie, but then again you can only see it in one or two shots so nobody will call me out on it :)

Also - yes, I know that there wasn't an Ace of Hearts card in the movie, but my name's Adam, so I essentially had to be the "A" card :)

Anyway, feel free to ask any questions if you like. Thanks so much again for the ideas!

FYI -
materials for the above design.

Each ROW is almost 3 pieces of 12x18" foam. I made a template for both shape cutouts and there are 5 "points" pieces and 5 "rectangle" pieces. (so rough dimensions of the point pieces would be 9x6") I started out with 4 in each row for symmetry, but found out I couldn't bend my knees at all so i had to add more.

12 rows x 3 pieces = 36 foam pieces for the body alone.

2 entire pieces used for the bottom-caps. Fold in half, cut the curve out. Easy.

1 piece each for the shoulders, obviously.

At least 2 pieces each for the upper "sleeves". There's 3 overlapping scales + an elbow swivel.

I don't remember how many I used for the top/neck part - at least 5 peices because I had to add some structure underneath to improve the joints where it goes over the shoulders, plus the added swooping bits that go out past my shoulders. There is also (not shown) a black piece inside it with just a hole for my neck cut out, so you can't see straight into the huge opening.

Boots: 3 pieces each. 3 overlapping scales, 1 knee swivel, and a rounded part to cover the foot. Also, my motorcycle boots.

Gloves - hard to see in photo. Red spandex gloves with some scraps glued to the wrist and back of the hand. I couldn't replicate the ones in the movie as well as I wanted and still be able to use my fingers, so I went with function over form.

Helmet- 1 piece, and 1 donor helmet.

Total? Buy at least 60 pieces of foam. I have some left over and I know I bought at least 80. They were on sale, so total cost in foam was around $60. Cheaper than buying a costume!

Also, 1 bag of hot glue, 2 black paint-pens, black spray paint, red spray paint (can't see in the photo but I overlaid some red on the black paint to make it look like the paint is wearing off - it looks decent)

1 large wooden round dowel for the spear.
1 stencil for the back/sides.

Here's my Red Guard along with other Wonderlandians. It's still a WIP but I wore it to Labyrinth of Jareth Ball

Fantastic!
If you're in the Dallas area, you're welcome to borrow the large heart-shaped spear from my above photo!

Very, very cool costume idea... If I wasn't already waist-deep in a complicated build I think I would have been highly tempted to work on some card armor!

I think this needs to go in my 'something I'd like to do' file! Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with your build! :):thumbsup
