Air Dry Clay question

Hi,

This may make some more seasoned crafters shudder... so I apologise in advance.

I was making a fibreglass mask, that was going well but some eye detail broke in the mould. I decided that as I had some air dry clay I could simply sculpt the missing piece on the mask and all would be well.

It pretty much was, but I made the mistake of sanding it a bit.

Where I sanded it, there are some fluffy hairs sticking out.

I assume this is to do with the way the clay is made and sanding it was a bad idea. However, is there anyway to fix this?

Maybe lacquer it and then sand the loose bits again, or go at them with a razor.

Any advice for things to try would be great. Thanks.

Should probably add, I believe the clay in question is: Newclay Air Dry Modelling Clay - Grey

You should try wetting it with your finger and see if that helps.

Some air drying clays contain fibres to add tensile strength. They are usually synthetic fibres, and would probably respond well to a quick blast with a heat gun. This would cause them to shrivel, and then you can lightly sand off the "burrs".
