I have these boots:

They are to my knowledge (and according to the site) 100% cotton. I have been told I should dye these to get the color I am looking to achieve (a slightly faded yellow). Has anyone delt with Dyeing boots like this before? Any pointer?

faded yellow? have an example of the color your after?

because that can be achieved a number of ways

I have a pair of everyday shoes that I bought for $3. They were white and quite frankly I thought they were ugly. But they were also made of cotton I believe, so I bought some RIT dye, (comes in liquid or powder form), followed the instructions, and now they are a kinda nice grey with a hint of brown. I actually wanted them to go darker but they didn't for some reason, but just follow the instructions and you should get something that looks good for what you want.

Difficulty with a yellow dye on white boots to control depth of colour , however , start by getting a good cotton canvas dye . Follow the instructions and you should get a good colour, you can try alternating different dyes , eg canary yellow, sunset yellow remember your boots will always slightly darken or go a deeper shade, to as degree - unless you bleach them, which is always an alternative if you want to lighten them

Go to Rit's site and look at the color chart to see what's closest to what you want.

Be sure to read their dyeing instructions. You'll probably need to pick up an industrial detergnet to get all the scotch guard out of the tabi so they'll take dye. You can get that at several places. I use Dharma Trading Co. Homepage
Lots of helpful info on dyeing fabric there as well.

This should be a fairly straightforward project.

Wouldn't Soda Ash also work?

I have only used soda ash as a dye fixative. Dharma sells Synthrapol to prepare fabric for dyeing. You may also find a good dye color on their site as well. They have more color choices than Rit offers.

Yes. Soda ash is a water softener. Not a detergent. It won't do anything for removing any substances in the fabric. It will just soften it up.
