Advice about making replica boomerangs

I'm seriously considering making a DC Comics 'Captain Boomerang' costume from the mini-series, "Identity Crisis. I'm very enthusiastic about coming up with some cool customised boomerangs (razor-edged, explosive etc) to wear in the bandolier that is part of the costume.

What material do you think would be best to make these? I'm looking for something:

  • light-weight (but not TOO light-weight, a bit of heft would be nice);
  • rigid;
  • easily worked;
  • can be painted to look like different materials e.g. metal

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just make them out of aluminium if you have a band saw. A cheap 9" band saw will save lots time and $$$ . Anywhere from 0.06 to .0125 should make light stuff. Dremeling 0.125 would take a while

I'm afraid I don't have a band saw, JPH. Whatever material I end up using is going to have to be shaped purely by dremel. That's why I'm interested in pre-cut blanks.

I agree on the styrene. Go to the hardware store and buy pink insulation styrene sheets. Cut each to the same shape then glue them on top of eachother to get the thickness you desire. Then use a sander and shape. Once you get your shape, bondo it.... then sand that smooth. You can paint that or mold it :)
