Adding urethane scales to WSL Captain America Suit

Hi Marvel folks. I got a White Sheep Leather Endgame suit without chest scales, and the HurleyFX scales kit. I'm trying to figure out how to attach them with regard to the collar snap buttons. I've heard the thing to do is punch a hole in the top urethane pieces for the snap to go through, but the urethane seems to be a bit thick for that. That is, I can sort of get the button to press in, but it's not strong enough and pops right back out. Should I instead be trimming around the area? Or am I missing something else here?

I managed to solve the snap button issue. I did just have to make the urethane holes a bit larger so more of the fabric could be pushed up and the buttons snap just fine now.

The other question I have is... the urethane scales overlap just a bit at the armpits of the vest. Are people trimming their armor to match the arm cutouts of the vest, or leaving it and just covering over with the back harness?
