Ok, I just got back home and snapped some pics. First thoughts, kind of cool but definately a toy. It isn't a nice as the TOS Phaser from AA in my opinion.

Pros
No Screw Holes
Moving Moirre pattern
Comes with multiple sounds
Comes with the scanner
Nice bright LEDs
Great costume piece

Cons
McCoy's voice is terrible
Strap is very cheap
Feels cheap like the bottom door and battery compartment will fall off

Here is the AA Tricorder

Thanks for the comparison, and as always your pics are incredible! Your right, there really is no comparison, looks like I'm gonna have to find a MR now LOL

hmmm...

Well, it may not be perfect but it's better than the Playmates one I have now and MUCH more in line with MY budget.
I'm buying one. :)

Thanks VERY much for the pics!

I'm confused, though...some of the pics show the toy med scanner has the red lines, and some show it doesn't. What as I missing?

Yes, one red line. I must have not uploaded one with the red line.

Excellent pics and review! :thumbsup

I too was momentarily baffled by the disappearing red line on the medical scanner, but I think it's the gray shaft down the center of the scanner, which hides the red line behind it in some of the shots.

Red line is visible in this shot as well as the pic of the scanner inside the lower compartment.

I don't have mine yet so I can't say how happy I am with it... but I guess just like the DST phaser and comm toys, you have to take the bad with the good.

The new tricorder is too big and has incorrect proportions overall and in the details. And yet, it's the best option for $50 (miles better than the old Playmates, and one tenth the cost of an MR!).

As it is it's a pretty good representation of HMS's version of the tricorder, as seen in the Rodd.com kit and also in the Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribbleations"

So if you like Dax more than Uhura, this is your tricorder. :lol

Awesome pics as usual, J! Of course the MR is better quality, but for something that sits on a shelf, MR $ are just a waste. For less than $40, I'll actuall play with this one! I have it with mt St Exp. Comm. and AA phaser in the stand you made!

Thanks for posting pics -- is there any way to push button on scanner ( for sound effect) AND simultaneously spin the thumbwheel to make scanner spin around with just one hand? Can u push button with second finger and spin wheel with index finger??

Also, the screen-used prop had two red lines on the INSIDE -- on same tube as the circular discs -- the red lines spun around with the silver discs -- it looks like the HMS scanner has the red line applied to the OUTER tube -- am I seeing this right or no?

Here is link to the actual screen-used prop:

Too bad DST scanner didn't get this right -- but still a cool toy.

Thanks a million for posting pics.

Thanks for the comparisons! Of course, now I am a little bummed.... But, it's not like I was very likely to run out and get an MR, and if I did, I sure wouldn't be wearing it around cons! But for a cheap one, I'm okay with that.

Gee, I wonder if they bring the Star Trek Experience back to Vegas, maybe they could come up with a Tricorder squirt gun to go with their phaser! :lol Now that'd be another cheapy to pimp out!

I'm not sure about taking it apart yet. There are no visible screw holes. I imagine the side panels snap on, then go from there.

Great pics, bro! ;)

I'm still looking for the DS Tricorder, locally. I recently picked up the Phaser and Communicator. I would have given anything to have those back in the 70's when I was growing up. Instead, I had Remco and Mego. Oh yeah.....and I went through 3 or 4 of those "Landing Party" model kits. :lol
