A wood painting question

Can anyone suggest a good paint I can use to paint wood as to cover up the woodgrain? I need a solid flat black look to the woods on painting. Is there a spray paint that would do that, or am I stuck with using a brush?

Thanks in advance.

with a nice coat of primer on before hand.. any paint should cover up the 'wood grain'..

Also had some success with four coats of a thick primer such as Upol-5. Sand in between (but don't wet sand or the wood will expand), and some car body filler to fix any really rough areas.

I use a few coats of wood varnish first, then primer.

If you start with a lot of grain texture, you should sand the wood first, then primer. You can start with primer, but then you have to primer many times until the grain is gone and you have the surface finish you wish.

It it has an open grain like oak, you should fill, sand, then primer.

Thank you for the information everybody. As soon as it stops raining and gets passed this weekend's scheduled snow, I should be over the finish it.

A side question, for a different project, what auto body filler did you use? Your grip looks really good.

I use Isopon P38 for all my filler needs but any kind of 'bondo' would work. I only had to use it in deep areas.

Just to add my two cents I find a couple coats of fast drying poly gives me a grain free rock hard finish ready for paint (after sanding).

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think he weather will be nice tomorrow, so hopefully....

kurtyboy - where did you find Isopon p38? I found a bondo at my auto parts store, but if the P38 is better...

Michael - what poly did you get?

Thanks again,
Sean
