A problem with Back to the Future III.

Gone but not forgotten.
This may have already been brought up, but I just realized something today.
Okay, so in Part II Young Doc and Marty blast the Delorean out of the mine - the car had been struck by lightning and Doc had to repair the time circuit with 1955 parts, put new wheels on it and then Marty took off for the old west to rescue Doc from being shot by Bufford.
Marty arrives in 1885, rips the fuel line and now he and Doc have a power because there's no gasoline to power the Delorean up to 88mph -- but wait, there are now 2 Delorean here and the one doc buried in the mine should still have gas in it - right?

ahh, time paradoxes.

heres the issue. if he took the car out of the mine and traveled forward through time to 1985, then the car that he removed won't be there in the future. everytime he time-travels, he creates a new possibility (like where the entire city has changed due to the discovery of the almanac). henceforth there would only be one time travelling delorean in the future.

Not the case here. Gas wouldn't last that long in the tank and would probably cause more harm the Delorean over the course of 70 years if the tank still had gas in it. Doc removed the gasoline (why make it go to waste?), sealed the delorean in the mine and the 1955 counter part even said "Alright. I put gas in the tank!" just before Marty went back in time.

They couldn't go back to the mine to get gas from the now sealed Delorean because there is no gas in there at all.

Awww thanks for ruining the movie for me. I never even thought about the second Delorean. Funny.

All of BTTF is impossible as past time travel is impossible, and there is no such thing as alternate universes despite what sci-fi wants us to believe, so it's really all a moot point anyway.

yup. just like vampires, DJs and man-made global warming.

Why are Kirk and Spock watching Def Leppard?

why not? :-D

Yeah... we did discuss this a while back. I'm sure the topic isn't around anymore. The basic explanation we could come up with was that Doc would have drained all of the fluids as well as remove the tires so that it could be preserved in the old mine for the next 70 years. Now what he did with the gasoline and other fluids when he drained them is anyone's guess. In 1985, there wasn't as much thought given to proper disposal of such waste. He may have just drained them to the ground.

Why does the train not stop after hitting the Delorean?
Why do the onlookers at the RR crossing do nothing?
Why are there no police at the scene when Marty and Jennifer return?

Well, Pyromania was a pretty rockin' album in 1983. Maybe that's the year they were looking in on.

Two great tastes that taste great together. Original series Trek is like Arena rock to me.

Okay, so back to Back to the Future - I guess Doc draining the tank would be the only explanation - seems like Doc would hold onto something like gasoline.

some things aren't meant to be understood. why is avatar so good in 3D and so terrible in 2D? no-one will ever know.

My problem with BTTF 3 is that a car that had been converted to operate on fusion (or was that just the timedrive?) and could fly (would normal gasoline really allow for that?) shouldn't NEED gasoline.. Marty ripping the fuel line always seemed ridiculous to me.

As for the fusion/flying car bit. I kind of base this upon the thought that a car running out of fuel and plummeting from the sky might not be very cool, thus leading me to believe that the car is fusion powered.

Future time travel is very possible.

I said backward or past time travel is impossible, because it is.

Wait just a minute there Spartacus. Are you trying to tell me that when I throw my car in reverse and go really fast...that I am not going back in time. Bummer, man.

I gotcha, and I agree with that:):thumbsup

This is my biggest problem with BTTF 2
.

Biff steals the time machine and goes back to 1955 to give himself the sports almanac. He then returns to 2015.

Marty and Doc, unaware of what Biff has done get in the Time machine and go back to 1985 except it's all different from the 1985 they were expecting because of what Biff did in the past.

If old Biff in 2015 went back to 1955 and changed the past, wouldn't the future change all around Marty and Doc in 2015 ? Wouldn't Biff have returned from 1955 to 2015 to find that everything was different ? I mean, it worked for Marty in BTTF 1.

And don't give me that 'Marty and Doc went back and fixed everything so the future didn't change' crap because that's crap. In the future Marty was a loser as a result of the car crash, but then they went back and fixed that after the fact. Thus the future is however it is set up in the past.

oh yeh thats a good point actually, how the hell did biff come back to 'normal' future and then the other guys travel back to a completely different past? hmm. odd
