A New Look for the RPF!

Crafted by Fandom -or- Fandom Crafted -- there you have "people" and "they are making stuff"......which is what we are and what goes on here.....

Craft the Fandom is the same as saying Craft the Audience, Craft the Group, Craft the Community.......just doesn't make any sense to me as English language.

Actually, the new motto is "Craft YOUR fandom." The implications are much different with the word "your" instead of "the" in between those words. Earlier, I was pretty meh about this motto, but after Art's explanation I really dig it, so I'm gonna try and explain to you what I see from it.

Fandom as a whole has moved past the dictionary definition. "Fanbase" fits the old definition much better. Fandom now means both the fans themselves and what we add to the media we consume. Fandom is the late-night forum arguments, the cosplay contests, the artist alleys selling high quality fan art alongside original works. It's the sum of the people who love a particular work and the things they create to show their love. It's props and action figures and tattoos and novelty t-shirts and your second child's middle name. We are collectively a fanbase, but our interactions with each other, with the creators, and with the film/game/show/book/comic itself form the fandom. In that respect, the new motto is perfect.

Everything on this forum is about fandom. We're all contributing to our various fandoms, from those who make single props for display only and those who make full-fledged cosplay to those who frequent the junkyard and those who argue about spoilers in the Walking Dead thread. We are enriching the culture and changing what was once a consumer product into something else entirely. "Craft your fandom" really encompasses everything I've seen here.

Additionally, I think three words is the perfect length for a motto. Two is way too brief, but more than four is getting into mouthful territories.

I was getting ready to make a rebuttal, but I think Astrokid nailed it.

To reiterate and add a little more:

"YOUR FANDOM" is very different from "fandom" alone. While I certainly understand "fandom's" dictionary definition, in the context of our tagline, your fandom is the totality of things you are a fan of.... perhaps akin to a kingdom, but instead of a king ruling over his domain, it is all things that you, the fan love and are passionate about.

Now, our tagline could be:

"Draw, build, sculpt, sew, paint, mold, cut, saw, sand, assemble, glue, and create your favorite movie, television, video game, comic book, story, myth, original idea's props, costumes and models"

or:

craft your fandom.

This was a key design consideration. A lot of people a bemoaning how boring and plain the new logo is, but what they are missing is that it is almost endlessly versatile, as your image demonstrates.

As I and my friends use "fandom" now, I'd say it's closer to "nerdery" or "geeky passion" than it is to "fanbase" which may very well have been the original intention. So I say it's a good fit. As for any implications of women doing needlepoint of kittens (Which is a fine hobby to have) I don't get that at all. To me that is "Arts and Crafts," but "craft" as a verb to me is more closely in line with craftsmanship, or even a more tangible form of "conjure."

And, Art, I think you need your own tagline, how about "Ars Gratis Artis." It just fits...what with your name and all.

How about something as a tag line that explains both the "RPF" above as well as what the forum is about.... maybe something like:

Replica Prop Forum.

Indeed, people can go on creating their own variations suited to reflect the colors from their favourite fandom.

I hope somebody makes a BTTF version with the orange, yellow and again orange color transition :).

We purposefully moved away from using the full name almost 3 years ago.

Art, perhaps adding some emphasis by making the "your" italic would get the point you illustrate in the quote above across to the masses a little better?

"craft your fandom"

Or you could always use JD's quote from my sig as the tag line. :lol
 
I'm already loving how versatile the new logo is proving to be. The ones christrom and TheNickFox came up with are great.
 
Sure... Just without the Run DMC.

Then I guess it could similar to hundreds or thousands of other logos, in that case, if that was the first thing that came to mind.......:lol

Those 4 bars will allow for many other theme-based variations. More options to add colour.

Nick beat me to it, but since I was already working on it, here is one at 1920X1080.

I am no graphic designer or artist, but again, I think this is just the tiniest taste of what can be done with this logo and the nearly infinite treatments that can be applied to it.

While you MIGHT be able to jam one of these onto the current logo, you are going to struggle a lot more to make it happen...

For the naysayers, whether you like it or not, are you beginning to see our reasoning?
