A New Look for the RPF!

Guys and Girls,

I can’t tell you how excited I am to share this news with you! About three years ago, we introduced a new logo to the RPF community. As with any change, it was met with a mixed response, but over time and through repetition, has grown on a number of you. Many of you even adopted it as your personal banner during the theft of our domain name earlier this year.

Despite all the traction and brand equity we have gained with the current logo, we have known from the very first day that it had both technical and aesthetic issues. However, at the time we had it created, it was all we could afford. Over the past three years, we have had three professional graphic designers take a look at the logo and try to rework it into something that would be more suitable. Those designers didn't fail as much as the logo was simply impossible to correct.

We finally accepted the fact that we couldn't build a great logo on a weak foundation and gave up entirely on the current logo. For almost a decade, fellow RPF member and graphic designer, GINO has provided us with artwork for many projects at both the Dented Helmet and here on the RPF. We approached him, asking, not for a rework, but for a redesign of our logo from the ground up. We had a long list of requirements and criteria that had to be met, primarily areas where the previous logo came up short. What GINO brought back to us was stunning in its simplicity and perfection. It met every requirement while eliminating every weakness from the previous logo. It also provides a massive amount of flexibility for things that are just around the corner!

As with our current logo, we have struggled with trying to create a tagline that really nailed who we are as a community and while we have used “Collaborate. Create. Collect.”, we never felt that it really captured the excitement or passion of what we do. In conjunction with the new logo, GINO developed a new tagline that nails what this community is all about and does so with beautiful brevity.

While we won’t be applying this new logo to the current iteration of the site, we wanted to share it with you now so you have an idea of what is coming in the near future; our long awaited move to vB4. GINO is also helping us with the look for that upgrade. We had a look fairly close to being nailed down, but with this new logo and tagline, we felt that look really didn't quite fit and so we have started in a new direction that we are confident you are going to love!

2012 has been one of the most challenging years this site has ever faced, but we came together as a community and are stronger for it. With that in mind, we are shrugging off the old and tainted, and grasping onto the new for an even brighter tomorrow. While we know change is always a bit uncomfortable, we are super excited about the new logo and tagline and hope you will embrace it as the symbol of this great community! Look for new RPF swag in 2013 with this logo and tagline along with a whole new look and feel for our website!

Out with the old and busted. In with the new hotness!

Not sure about the actual logo, but love the tagline.

Digging the sleek look and great to see how the logo goes well with various color combinations. Blue and white appears to be the right choice. And that tagline is brilliant. Splendid job GINO :thumbsup.

That looks great. It's got a bit of a retro-futuristic thing going on, but it's very clean and I love me some simple, clean graphic design.

The big question is: how will it look with pumpkins or icicles?

How will the short cut icons on top match with the new style?

Think some members will also have to change their avatar... :D

Really loving this new logo, will there be a new forum skin to match?

Not under vB 3 (our current software). We are working feverishly on the new look and hope to have it out soon. The whole look was redesigned to accommodate this new logo.

Looks neat! For now I think I slightly prefer the old one, but I'm sure that will change once I get used to this one. And the new one is obviously more versatile, and I quite like a lot of those colour variations.

I think the logo is great! Very streamlined, modern, and versatile. But I have to say that the tagline is brilliant. It truly encapsulates the RPF in three words. Just Awesome. :) I know Gino and Art worked really hard to get this to be all it can be...and it shows!
