A new Firefly weapon... the Jaynestown pistol!

Well, alright, it's not exactly new but as far as I know it has never been replicated before.

Way back in December I started up a thread about Rasputin's Mecha Glove from Hellboy (still going strong with a lot of fantasic progress being done on a build by ASavage) and for that project I started tinkering with having a few pieces of it rapid prototyped. While doing the models for it, I also started to fiddle with a few Firefly projects that I have been wanting to do for a long time and this is the first to have some solid results to show.

Jayne's "plastic" pistol from Jaynestown! Now, this pistol only made a brief appearance in the episode as Jayne was taping it to his abdomen, but in actuality it's one of the most unique props made for the show, very much resembling the gun carried by bounty hunter Jubal Early. (Some of you may recall I cast up a few metal copies of that gun a few years ago.) So, I have been toiling away with this for the last couple of months or so and I finally got the first prints yesterday from a local shop. I am extremely happy with the results!

This pistol was modeled in much the same way as my virtual prototype for Vera/Alice was (see my sig link). I would never have thought that it was going to turn out so well right out of the shop- there's barely any prep work to do before painting. I just need to go over the surface with very light sandpaper and fix a couple of very small details. I have a feeling that Rapid prototyping is going to become my new addiction!

Compared to the photos in the Firefly archive, I am pleased to say this is almost dead on and I am very relieved to have matched the size to the correct grips (Pachmayr Compacs for rossi revolvers) almost perfectly. I was worried that they wouldn't fit and that I'd have to redo a lot of stuff and order another print. So far this is probably the most screen accurate replica I have ever put together and I'm real happy to finally be able to add a new Firefly gun to my collection- there aren't that many cool ones left to make!

Next up is that I have to fix a couple small details, like make a cocking lever and smooth out a couple hard edges. Then I'm going to see if I can mold this sucker (might end up with a couple extra too... ).

More talk later (I need some Zs), but for now, enjoy the pics!

That is SWEET, I was just checking out the hero one on propstore or screen used the other day, great job, love the outcome!

Love to know where you saw the original listed.
I've only ever seen it on the fireflyarchive and in the "Still Flying" Firefly book.

This replica is amazing, tho'!

It's on Yourprops : Firefly (TV) (2002), Jayne's Hold-Out Pistol, original / screen-used
The owner of the Firefly Archive has been selling off his collection,
so I guess we're gonna see stuff turning up in other people's

Ah yes, I've seen this collector's Serenity items on display at Farpoint Con outside of Baltimore.

He/she just recently listed an Alliance rubber stunt pistol on eBay.
Wonder if they are a member here?

Maybe I'll see it first-hand Feb.19th at this year's Farpoint.

Thanks for the heads-up,
Mike

That is very cool. I saw this one over on yourprops.com, and had to smile.

I'd be interested in one of those extra's you might have laying around . . .

Thanks for the kind words guys. It feels good to be doing new Firefly stuff again.:)

For a long time I was planning on making this out of styrene but now that I have it in my hands I realize that the details would never have turned out this crisp if I did. (This thing is a smaller than you'd imagine.) I'm still stunned by the quality of the print. I've attached a photo showing the texture in the "raw" surface- you can just barely feel it.

Right now I'm looking at the barrel (which I did not actually print) . The original is apparently wrapped in some kind of "holographic tape". I found something called "hotwraps", which is reflective tape for cars, but other than that I don't what kind of tape it could be. It's nothing I've ever seen.

What I've done so far for the barrel is make one out of styrene and wrap it with thin strips to give some good definition of the spiraling texture. (I think that might hold up well during molding.) I'll probably put a steel barrel insert inside it to add some weight. The look of the tape will be easy to achieve by first coating the barrel in silver and then with a thin layer of transparent "smoke" paint. (It'll give it a little more depth than using only gun metal.)

I'll post some more photos as soon as I've done more work on it.

Oh, and a small note about those extras- please PM me instead of posting here or the mods might think this is turnin' into an interest thread or somethin'. :)

Here's the latest. First pass paint job. (Sorry for the crappy photo but I didn't have time to set up proper lighting.) It's getting a silicone bath in the next day or two, then I'll finish it up.

I've been studying the available photos of the original a little with regards to the paint. It appears that the original was likely painted by hand and not sprayed.

Not too much to report over the last few days as I've been fiddling with another 3d printed Serenity prop (a grenade). However, I did attempt to give the pistol a silicone bath yesterday with unfortunate and (almost) disastrous results. Something went haywire with the silicone (no, not sulfur in the clay, but something with the catalyst) so that it didn't gel. So, I've just spend the last 2-3 hours meticulously cleaning sticky chunks of goo from every nook and cranny of it. :p

Damn, I really should start using smooth-on instead of the crappy stuff I can get locally. Going to make another attempt today. Crossing all fingers...

Well,

I've had a hell of a few weeks (personal stuff) but I managed to do some casting...

Ya know....
A little sanding, a little of this, a little of that and a splash of paint;
and you're looking at something VERY cool!

So... I decided to take the last few extra casts I had left and finish them up. I replaced the cast-in barrel with a separate one, wrapped in tape like the original. replaced the lower rod with one out of metal. Tried to match the weathering on the original too but getting that perfect was nigh-impossible. I suspect the original gun was hand painted... it kinda looks that way. I used a combo of airbrush, washes and hand painting on these.

For those who are interested, since I've been putting what's needed together to build my own Jayne hold-out pistol, I recently realized that I received a barrel that is ostensibly identical to the one used in the screen-used pistol with the original mold I have. It's a carbon fiber tube with a metal rod in the middle (probably added afterward). They call this particular style of tube “unidirectional tape finish,” I believe.

The barrel in the photos I posted under the mold identification thread was a carbon fiber unit wrapped in aluminum foil. I only figured out it was identical to the original one recently, after the foil started coming off the one I have during molding, and after I looked at the screen-used pistol again.

For my replica, I've just bought the following from an online store, which appears to be identical. Once I get the tube, I’ll confirm or refute this:

Amazon.com: Carbon Fiber Composite Tube (Uni-Directional, Tape Finish) - Inner Diameter: 0.375" Outer Diameter: 0.450" Length: 30": Everything Else
