A Daft Trooper-(TK takes on DP!)

It really is bitter sweet. I'm so happy to finally see one of my lids chromed, but I'm so bummed out that you are not entirely happy with it.
I hope they offer some form of compensation. fingers crossed for you.

Creations'n'Chrome is going to re-do the helmet. Keeping my fingers crossed. Though, sadly it won't be done for the album release, which stinks.

We'll see! Besides the flaws, your cast looks great chromed.

Test fit with the bike! by TK9336, on Flickr

A buddy suggested I get a pic with the leathers...glad I did! It's not fitted correctly on my head (as I am holding it) but I can't wait to see it re-done. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd finished. Cannot wait!

Thank you!!!

Here's some chromeporn:

Guy Man hand plates - Firewire's ABS kit by TK9336, on Flickr

Unlike the helmet, these came out really well and I am extremely happy with them! The helmet should get back to Cali this coming Wednesday. The other helmet still isn't chromed. I am exploring my options. If nothing plays out I might stick with C'n'C depending how the redux goes.

Help?

I'm working on a similar project (Not as good, of course), and I wanted to know if anybody had any suggestions on what to make a "mold" out of to vacuum guy's dome around.

Hey RoShambo123- I will ask my friend's and see what their recommendation is. From what I've seen, it's just the facemask section of the helmet as a solid chunk then vacformed over using PETG. I will ask though. You won't need a large vac former and the one you need to build can be built in the garage.

I've been too busy with trooping lately, and my conversion from TK to TD I haven't spent much time on my DP. But-

-Gloves ordered to recreate the HAA look of Daft Punk.
-V2 HAA jacket going to finished in early July.
-RAM Tuxedo to be done early August.
-Pendants by Sorenzo. Replaced both chains though with real gold and silver.
-Going to try a vinyl dye for the rubber soles on my Adidas Jabbars.

Yes, also I do have plans to sculpt TK-DP buckets. Going to do a pep Daft Punk lid with a TK one...though finding a TK bucket in ONYX or a polyurethane resin will be a challenge (plus I don't how a pep Stormtrooper helmet would turn out). I am not sure how to credit a TK lid. I don't plan to sell casts of DP/TK helmets. I'll tackle this further down the road. I wanted to try using a vac formed TK lid, but ABS plastic with a pep attachment would not sand well... at all. Least I don't think it would.

Thanks for the help!

Oh, and the Guy-man helmet returns from Creations'n'Chrome next Friday after being fixed of its runs and errors. I pray to the robot Gods that it isn't in worse condition than I sent it in to begin with! All my electronics just sit in bags, mostly sodered, but it's the last part of the build I want to tackle.

Daft Gloves?

I had a chance to sit down and assemble my gloves. I need to move the pinky panels back on the right hand, but other than that I was extremely pleased with the complete ease of assembly. The only thing I would add is 3M weatherstrip is some STICKY stuff. I got a tiny bit on a chrome panel, and it is a complete pain to remove it. I also got some glue on the gloves and will be trying Goo-gone on them tomorrow after work.

These things are just ridiculously shiny. It looks professional, and in going for the HAA look, I believe I succeeded!

Here is a short tutorial:

Daft Gloves! by TK9336, on Flickr

Materials:
-3M Weatherstrip adhesive
-Black Men's elbow length gloves (We Love Colors.com)
-Disposable gloves
-Craft Foam
-Super glue (accelerate is optional but helped a lot.)
-Sharpie
-Scrap cardboard for workspace and cleaning up glue.
-Scissors
-Chromed hand pieces

The craft foam served the purpose of filling the recess of the plates, which gave the fabric cloth and the meat of a finger a uniformly flat surface to adhere too. Should I need to take the pieces off without harming them, with enough force the peiece will detach from the super glued craft foam. The following pictures pretty much explain the rest of the work. I am a visual learner, so I hope it helps.

Also critical: you need to apply 3M weatherstrip on both sides to be adhered and give it about 20 seconds to get tacky before applying pressure. The trick I learned was to give upwards pressure with the finger being glued on, while apply downwards pressure with a free hand using a spare disposable glove as a protection from totally fingerprinting the chrome finish. The finger prints come right off, but I felt better just using a clean barrier to press firmly on top of the chrome plate. Use the meat of your finger to fully compress into the panel for better adhesion and final fit.

Also some more good news:

After being really let down getting my Sorenzo GM lid back from C'n'C had drips, runs, orange peel and other nastiness the shop agreed to re-do the helmet. I was impressed and my faith restored. My only paranoid concern are that the holes for the LED's and RCA jacks were PRECISE when I repeatedly filled and sanded them for the perfect fit. Other than that since I won't truly know that until I have it physically in my hands next week, the pictures do give it some justice. Plus fancy, shiny cars. WHO DOESN'T LIKE FANCY AND SHINY CARS?

The holes are probably an optical illusion, but that is ladies and gents, chrome porn at its finest!

Another trick I learned for the gloves if you get 3M weatherstrip on the fabric or panels itself. DO NOT SCRATCH IT WITH A KNIFE (or anything else sharp) doing will cut into the film and it will peel off your ABS plastic. I fought the urge to use my fingernails but instead played the waiting game.

I work in a school district during my summers back at home, and have access to a product called Goo Gone (commercially and easily available). I brought it home today and it took the 3M weatherstrip right off with very little work. It doesn't damage the chrome either. Safe to use on chrome and the gloves themselves. Worked perfectly. Pour some on a microfiber cloth and go to town.

Now to play the waiting game with my lid getting back.

I also ordered sequins (finally) for my RAM tux. I also found the perfect shoes to use as well. I mean, they are spot on. I will have to add the graphite finish (and possibly sew another fabric on top of the leather already there to recreate the seams.) Either way, they are perfect and $40.00 brand new from Mooda in South Korea. The only thing that isn't accurate, would be the tops. But, that is minor, I mean who would pull you over in full RAM garb to ask to see the tops of your shoes? (I would, but hey, that's me...I gotta know where you got them from!) Good buzz words to search for in relation to finding look-a-likes to the YSL's. "Ankle boots, chelsea boots, disco boots, dress boots."

Here are some pictures. Here is Daft Punk, on the beach, and this picture reveals just how tall these shoes are. I won't be going for that length. More pictures of Daft Punk in their RAM suits are on the flicker, just click any picture I post to go to my feed.

And the shoes I found-

Mooda Ankle Boots by TK9336, on Flickr

Cost wise, these are perfect. I wanted to use a normal pair of chelsea boots like my Stormtrooper ones, but the biggest difference I was finding while searching was the size of the heel. Chelsea boots on a whole have short heels, while YSL's has a rather tall one (It's a retort to the 70's after all considering the rest of the RAM outfit.) Also to note: Daft's YSL's chelseas are much taller than the pair commercially available.

It will take 7-20 days to arrive, but I will post pics as always.

Another good update:

I received my lid back from C'n'C today. All the issues were fixed. There is some minor stuff but at this point I need to finish this helmet. I can always sell it and make another one, for my perfectionist soul. The biggest discrepancy I have is that on the right digi panel, it got more filled in with panel than the left. The details on a GM helmet are small and not too deep to begin with, so for the untrained eye something like this overlooked. I am bummed because it will bug me, but it looks great in pictures. You have to be like 8" away to examine to notice it. I will have my Thomas and gloves chromed at Coat of Chrome by Don next. Gary (C'n'C) provided great communication and re-did my helmet at no cost too, just wish a mix up like this didn't happen in the first place.

I showed a friend of my old man the helmet and after telling him he didn't even notice it, even after the fact. First words were, "damn that's shiny." Anyways, some pictures to illustrate what I am talking about:

I have also been hunting for the right fabric for my RAM tux. So far after doing an exhaustive internet search these were the best two I could find. Neither are perfect, as a true replica would have to be sequenced, from scratch. I already ordered 4 yards of #2, and a test swatch from #1. My advice? Get sample swatches first, ALWAYS! I just had to eat $85 for the fabric after learning they do not accept returns, which from inexperiance, is my own fault. Easy to resell though if it doesn't work out. I also suspect very strongly the sequins used were 5mm, which is the only downer about #1, because that only comes in 3mm (but looks better IMHO.)

Black Square Sequins fabric #1 by TK9336, on Flickr

Black Square Sequins #2 by TK9336, on Flickr

Now, once everything is interfaced and sewn can look different from the fabric as it is, loose. There were a few fabrics from China and Hong Kong suppliers that were spot on (but required a minimum order of like 500 yards :p) I asked them if I could get a 4-3 yard sample swatch. Oh well. When I have them in hand I will take pictures as well.

Stay daft my friends.

Hi Jim, I found them on eBay. LED Chaser Beacon Pic Microcontroller Light Show Strobe 8x 5mm LEDs 9905MULT | eBay

C'n'C will re-tint it for me. Still waiting to hear if that includes throwing a ton of paint on it. The digi panels would be in danger of getting filled in! :( So we'll see what he says.

Also, my fabric arrived today from California:

RAM Fabric (#2) I went with! by TK9336, on Flickr

Turns out that fabric I found in the UK, as reference as fabric #1 on my flicker, only comes in 3mm, whereas what we need to make the tux is 5mm. Finding a black, square sequin fabric was tough enough that I only found two commercially available fabrics! My friend Justice was able to find a 6mm sew on, already strung together sequins. Turns out, they only came in the circle shape. I tried finding the same for square, I couldn't find any for the life of me. So this is literally my only hope. Honestly, once it's sewn together, it will be dead on. I am pretty excited to see it come together!

I plan to get my gloves and helmet out to Coat of Chrome sometime next week to be in time for Chicago Comic Con (Dragon-Con is out of the question for me, financially wise :( that would've been a killer 21st birthday party for me!) I also plan to redo the soles of my Jabbars with this vinyl dye for automotive interiors. Forever in the motion, the future is!

Another advancement made into the soft parts of the RAM costume:

Of the two fabrics I tracked down, I finally recieved the sample of the first fabric I thought was right on the money. Glad I asked for a sample. 3mm is TINY, imagine a tuxedo of that? Far too small. Seeing it in person it totally, and completely required. Here's a picture.

RAM Fabric #1 by TK9336, on Flickr

Here is the fabric I went with, for reference purposes I call this RAM #2. Notice the sizable difference in regard to the sequins. This is 5mm, while the picture above it is 3mm.

RAM Fabric #2 Measured by TK9336, on Flickr

I also received the black chelseas from South Korea today, and I am extremely happy with them. It might the be the first thing is build I don't have to re-do. First time and done? PINCH ME! All I need to do is get the correct graphite finish on there. I might go the extra mile and have new fabric sewn on to replicate the seams in Daft's YSL pair. I doubt I will, but I can't wait to see these shoes finished. This replica is really coming together fast. Remember kids, research is critical for saving $$$!

Mooda Chelsea Boots by TK9336, on Flickr

(Note, they aren't anywhere near the same height as Daft's, but they're tall enough with the right curve from the top of the foot to get the style down of the commercially available variant YSL does offer.)

More pictures on the flicker account. Feel free to browse them and make comparisons. The Mooda chelseas aren't perfect, but it's the closest I can find and will turn out great!

I hope to have my Thomas lid and gloves out this Friday to make it time for Dragon*Con 2013 (which happens to be over the weekend of my 21st birthday!)

Change of RAM boots:

I was helping my friend find RAM boots for our debut at Dragon Con this year. He wears US 12, so the Korean dress shoes I have don't come anywhere near that size, so I found these instead. I am getting them! They are so much better, and accurate to what Daft wears. Can't wait to get mine in the mail!

This way, we match each other. I am going to use spray adhesive and simple glitter. I will post a tutorial on how I do it once I get these new replacements. The cool thing is that I am 5'7" and he is 6'1", so with height proportion we are spot on. This is gonna be so cool guys! It's going to be a race to get the electronics done in time (he's in Atlanta and picking up a cast from Volpin tomorrow), and he's gonna be soldering like a madman to whip up a Thomas in less than a month. The stars are aligning, let's just hope they stay that way so we can roll out in full RAM suits at the end of the month.

I can say as a completely straight man, that I spent two hours today looking at glitter for a pair of ankle boots for my RAM Daft Punk suit. Now, I know quite a bit about "glittering" shoes properly. Finding the right color wasn't simple either to be frank (damn you Yves-Saint Laurent), but I found a very close match to Daft's. Martha Stewart Hematite fine glitter in a 1.5 oz bottle. Another given of making Daft Punk stuff- the material is 1) next to impossible to find and 2) if you find it, they're usually out of it, or don't have the quantity needed! (Especially when you need it, now!) Needless to say, I bought the last one, and I hope it's enough to do two pairs (and from everything I've watched, it's more than enough.) So a tutorial coming next week on "glittering your Daft Punk shoes."

To be honest, I never knew they made so many colors of glitter. Seriously.

Discovery Daft Punk by TK9336, on Flickr

Hooray, my Stormtrooper neckseal finally doubles for another look, other than being a Stormtrooper...who'da thought? On another note about debuting this at Dragon*Con...since I am anal retentively accuracy driven. My cast is HAA, but will have the Discovery era lights in it. I will be wearing my HAA lid with RAM outfits. My buddy will have a Discovery era Thomas, without the smile that will double as our HAA/RAM Thomas helmet, with electronics and "lite" sideboards (just white led's behind color gels.) Yes it isn't perfect, but there is no where enough time to have the proper helmets per era before Dragon*con, which is in 20 days...AHHHHH. The only impression I will be doing that will be 100% correct will be my HAA leathers, Jabbar sneakers, elbow length plain black gloves, Sorenzo HAA lid and black balaclava.

Yeah, we're basically putting a Thomas lid together in a month, in which I have to add; Volpin is a wonderful person to deal with.(Getting a lid, and program codes, thank you again. He even cleaned up his cast before sending it, which was about a day turnaround.) In addition our full RAM outfits are being done in essentially 3 weeks (not counting the time it took finding a proper sequin fabric [still not perfect] and shipping time.)

Thanks crafty! Much appreciated!!!

I never resolved the fact I needed a case to transport my Daft Punk helmets.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/skb-roto-x-molded-drum-case

I ended up going with SKB's 16x14 Tom case. It has received tons of great reviews from touring musicians who remark the toughness, and protection it has given their expensive drums. I wanted a music related case for my Daft lids, just because I wanted that "music" relation. Plus, given it's dimensions, if you were flying it would fit underneath your seat, but I wouldn't put it in the overhead bin. I got my Stormtrooper lid all kinds of cracked by trying that with a SOFT case. A la, why I wanted to go the hard case route with my Daft.

SKB 14X16 Tom Case by TK9336, on Flickr

Remember, you want to protect that expensive investment with a good case. Don't pour 1.5k into a helmet only to skimp out with a 40 dollar helmet bag. It is the same rationale I used on my Stormtrooper armor, using a Stanely mobile tool chest lined with foam. Plus I can put all kinds of Daft Punk stickers on here to personalize it, with my own decals as well.
