Hey all. Well, I think it is about time to wrap this little guy up. I got rid of the black cap, and used mighty putty for the end cap instead. I also went through a series of different paints to get the right color. I used a gray base paint, followed by a brown white mixture/ crackle mixture, and dry brushed brown, black, and white over top. To finish it off, I used a thin coat of antique white from Wal-Mart. The cracks still show through.

I still need to glue the button, and put a sealer on the paint to finish it off. My old driver that I was hanging onto that doesn't open will probably be put up on ebay either this week or next if anyone is interested.

Here are the pictures of it opened, closed, and partially opened.

I took the plung and made the groove in the side of the sonic with my dremel. It may have came out a little big, but it still works and it doesn't look that bad.

I am thinking I may have to get rid of the plastic cap, and replace the ball joint on the acrylic tube. The ball joint is a knob that is used on jewerly boxes, but I can only find it in wood. If anyone can tell me where to find it in metal, I would appreciate it.

I am also going to make the 1/2 inch area above the plastic cap area a little thinner as well.

Below are a few shots of the changes I made.

I finally made it to my grandfather's old workshop and got to work on my Doctor Who Sonic Screwdrivers (New Series).

It is still a work in process, but here is the low down so far:

-3/4 aluminum pipe turned on a lathe
-the bodies are all one piece with the exception of the top portion
-I found that the dumb bell approach was way to hard to do, so it will be made out of several pieces. I still need the thin piece on the inside along with the four slats and blue stone. I also have to smooth over the rough areas as well)
-being a pipe, I need to close off the bottom, but that shouldn't be a problem because it will need to be painted black anyways.

*Since it is a pipe, I may or may not make it a sliding functioning version although I don't think I am going to.

Well how does it look to start out with? It is my first time working with metal on a lathe.

Thanks for the response. I had a feeling that with "Who" in the title you couldn't resist looking :lol

As requested, I will keep you updated with my progress.

Re: Can you tell me "WHO" this belongs to?

Oops. The pictures are added in the first post.

Above are a few shots of the Sonic Screwdrivers I am working on.

The tips are added with shaped epoxy and sanded down. The epoxy that I used was the "mighty putty" that worked out great.

I used about three coats of black to coat the the handle area before added the crackle solution. I then added a mixture of different browns and white paint to get the ivory esque color. I think it turned out more like the 9th Doctor's Sonic rather than the 10th Doctors as I hoped.

What do you think so far?

That's starting to take shape nicely. I can see a sonic in there.

Thanks for the confidence boost.

I started on the black bottom part of the sonic. I removed all of the black paint and have worked on a pattern to paint around so it gives the sonic the groove section instead of the solid black look. My hands tend to shake when I paint though because of my Raynaud's disease.

Looking at it, it isn't too bad. Being a detail freak though it just doesn't set well with me.

I will take a pic of the bottom once it is completed.

Keep working on it. I can't wait to see your finished sonic screwdriver.

Re: 2-4-08 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) Updated Pictures

I added to pictures above. The emitter is almost complete. All the pieces are aluminum with the exception of the dowel rod (scrap steel pieces). I used epoxy putty and super glue to attach the dowl to the two top pieces making the dumb bell shape. I have a little bit of model paint that I will use to cover up the epoxy.

I need to add the 4 slats (in the picture) and find something to use as the blue stone to complete the top.

How is it looking so far?

D^(% it!!!! I missed my 2000 post... :(

Re: 2-4-08 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) Updated Pictures

Does anyone have any idea of what I can use for the blue stone on top? I just can't find anything that fits.

I will take a few shots tonight of what I have completed.

Added two new images above. They are "almost" done.

Re: 2-4-08 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) Updated Pictures

This is coming along nicely! I especially like the paint on the handle.

Good job! :thumbsup

Re: 2-4-08 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) Updated Pictures

Thanks, I like the paint job more on the smaller sonic (about 1/4 inch off of the other one). I may have to repaint the bigger one because it faded somewhat and the black is showing through on it too much.

Re: 2-4-08 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) Updated Pictures

The new pictures are the first two in the list above.

I think they are done with just a little correcting on the paint job on the pommel piece. It took me forever to find a blue stone to use that looked okay. Technically , it is a plastic bulb that belonged in a ceramic Christmas tree that I had to reshape. Looks pretty good to me. The only thing is that I held them together with super glue. That is the only thing I am not pleased about.

I plan on making one more, maybe two, since I figured out what to do and not to do with these. I am going to do the 9th version since it is smaller (5.75 inches) and possibly put in a slider tube.

Re: 2-24-08 2 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) DONE (I think)

I still think they are very good an much better than I could do. I will be happy to take one off your hands if you are looking to part with one.

Re: 2-24-08 2 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) DONE (I think)

Doctor Who,
For right now, I am going to hold on to both of them so I have some references for the new one when I get a chance to make it. After that they may get put up on ebay. I wouldn't know what to charge for one anyways and you could probably pick it up very cheap.

I am glad that someone likes them though. :D

Hi Arwa

Having dealt with the originals for a while now I'd say you've really captured the spirit of the new sonic in your replica.

It's a tough prop to reproduce so this is a damn good crack at it. Look forward to seeing the finished job.

Thanks for the comments. I think I have figured out how to get the circular shape in the top now. I can't wait to get started on my new version.

Excellent work, and I agree it is a complicated little piece to replicate, you've done a brilliant job :thumbsup

Re: 2-24-08 2 Metal Sonic Screwdriver (9th-10th) DONE (I think)

Mfxreplicas,

What the heck is the little black piece on the bottom? It almost looks like a marker cap of some kind. I painted my on on, but is almost needs that little piece to offset the rest of the SS.

Cody,
Thank you. :D
