Working on a new project, the 4th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (Doctor Who)

I originally tried to shape the piece on a makeshift lathe, but it wasn't precise enough. The new piece is made from a dowel wrapped in different sizes of masking tape.

The tip is made from a small dowel shaped with sand paper and secured into a piece of PVC with penny nails.

The next step is to Dremel off the ends of the nails and secure the tip to the handle.

Happy New Year everyone. Lot's of work in progress, but I haven't finished cutting together any new videos yet. In the mean time, how about another oldie but goodie?

Painted!

After lots of sanding, and building a new tip, I laid down several coats of gloss black.

Time to make the mold!

I wasn't happy with the finish on the sonic screwdriver master, so I wet sanded it and hit is with another coat of gloss black.

So, question from a newbie - it doesn't look like you clay-ed up one half of this, and poured on the clay - did you just measure halfway up and pour to a line?

Good question, I was wondering if anyone would notice.

For two piece molds that only require a simple seam I suspend the piece from the top and bottom in the mold box and then pour to the approximate half-way point. It's faster, doesn't require me to mush in a bunch of clay, and (most importantly) I don't have to clean all the clay out before I pour the second half of the mold.

Thats a great idea! can you give me an example of how you suspended the sonic's handle? I'm picturing like..a screw or dowel or wire attached to the end

Because the screwdriver is small and light I just suspended it in the mold box from the bottom using a wood screw. On the Pepsi Perfect project I suspended from the bottom with a wood screw and from the top with a nail.

That's awesome, I have one of Russ's with sound but this would be a lot of fun to play with

Thanks, I'm painting up my first pull. Here's a raw handle straight from the mold next to a painted one (I'm still working on the top).
