All,

OK this is a quick build to get something to make a mold. I know I could of just used something off the shelf at home but what fun is that :) I bounced the idea around of making a tardis key so I did searching via google and searching on the RPF and found TONS of information. Organic Mechanic has a great thread going in the forums just search TARDIS KEYS I hope he does decide to make a run !

This started out with using some Craolya Model Magic my great kiddo had laying around. Of course during this phase my kid helped out and made a Dalek to go along with the theme.

Used reference material to make layouts

Made more than one and even played around drawing on them later

Here is the great Dalek my daughter put together (now in my collection)

The Craolya is not a great medium for final product but let me test and play around to get my thoughts going.

Build Phase - I went to the hobby store and bought some Sculpey for building the Tardis key. This went very well since I had done the planning with the model magic. Sculpey was the clay I found that looked easy to work with and also could be oven baked then sanded / glued.

I made multiple keys to be sure I had working material as I planned to have problems and break a few along the way :) I also made up the raised portions to be glued onto the base when finished.

After they baked and cooled they were nice a hard so I got out the old Dremel - a small hand sander - files and a exacto blade to clean up each one. This is where the extra keys came in handy as I made a few mistakes and also then used the mistakes to test ideas on making a clean model.

Once the base models were cleaned up only one was useable and had the right look I wanted. So I took the little raised bumps I made earlier for the front of the key and started placing them and cleaning them up the same way.

Now it was final touches and gluing to get this in the shape for molding.

For some reason I really like this build. Mainly because the original key was pretty much made the same way using bits of sweepings from the floor of the workshop.

LeAnge that's is how it feels on my side, I keep making extras all a bit different hoping to capture the right feel !

I had no idea the original was made from extra bits :lol. Thanks for the info.

OK after I made the clay Tardis Key I placed in clay and made a Lego box around it. Now I planned on making a two part mold but the little kit I bought did not come with enough :facepalm So I pushed the clay around a bit to make a one sided mold for the experience :lol

After sleeping for a bit the next morning I had some helper hands and we took the box apart and got our mold.

Notice the lego bricks in the mold all ready for the other side to be made. Not this time will have to wait for another project to get that done.

In conclusion .. had no problems making a quick cast from the mold. In fact it was pretty cool to see it come together.

Had a little over pour but was not really concerned with any bit hanging off.

Once done again it was pretty cool to think I made that ! I will definitely be back to making a better 3rd doctor key in clay and doing a real two part mold. I now have a secret santa gift (River Song blaster) to go paint !!

p.s. the other key was a left over bit of clay I made an impression in was curious how it would work.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to suggest the best mold making materials you like to use.
