3d Printing a Mark VI Iron Man

My hope is to get the 2 halves o the chest printed. Basically, work my way down the body, then up from the feet with the boots...

1: Chest L&R
2: Upper Back L&R
3: Lower Back/Hip L&R
4: Shoulder/Bicep/Hand L&R
5: Forearms
6: Boot/Shin L&R
7: Calf L&R
8: Thigh L&R

I sent a message off to the head of the rapid prototyping department, looking the schedule some time to print another run or two of pieces, but I haven't heard anything back. They were offline for a while, so I'm assuming they've got a backlog to process.

In the meantime, I created this graphic to keep track of my progress...For whatever reason, I felt further along before I created this...

Anyone have any ideas where else I can post my instructable link to get some more attention to it? So far I've posted to, or gotten redirects from

Autodesk AREA

I've sent links to io9/lifehacker/kotaku/wired geekDad, but I doubt there's ever a chance of getting their attention.

I'm wondering if anyone else can think of other forums that might be interested. Industrial Design stuff, other modeling sites, 3D stuff

To be entirely honest, I'm really hoping I can win this thing. I'm obviously trying not to get my hopes too high, but it's hard. As I said earlier in the post, I would love to be able to print pieces for projects here. I have the skill to do it, just not the hardware. The work done here is amazing and most of what I've seen matches or surpasses screen quality. Obviously in a lot of cases, it has to surpass screen quality to stand up to in person viewing!

So thanks to anyone that can help out...if I could get more pieces of the suit printed, I would be posting about that, but until then (or at least until the end of April) winning this is my focus.

You could do a video slideshow of your pics and direct people to your instructables page... post it on youtube. Also, check out deviant art and 405th.com

Hadn't thought of that! I think I'll put that together today. I tried to register to posted at 405th.com and it looks like new registrations have been disabled.

Hi Samotep...is this fiberglass? What is it made out of and does it have the lights on the eyes/hands and chest? Does the visor on the face come up and is it available?

If you take a look back though the thread, that will answer most of your questions. It's 3D printed, not fiberglass. The eyes do light and you can see through the opening below them. The faceplate does open and close, but it is not motorized. When open, it is held in place with magnets.

And it's not for sale. This will go along with the rest of my suit once I am able to procede with the printing.

Just to keep this thing going...I took a picture from inside the helmet because the first thing that everyone asked when I wear it is, "How can you see?" So I tried to get a decent shot of what my right eye sees. Obviously, it's not perfect, but it's a pretty good approximation and give the idea.

Well, it's been a few weeks with no activity. I've contacted the guys who printed the helmet pieces several times, but I haven't heard anything back. If I'm planning on finishing this in any reasonable amount of time, I might be switching over to foam OR if I want to stay dedicated to the 3D printed option, I'll have to search other printing avenues.

I still have half the month to go until the end of the Instructables contest:

I'm more than happy to run a few prints for you on my ZCorp.

PM me for details. I'm not sure where you're located, but I'm in Atlanta.

Since the rest of my suit seems to be on a forced hiatus, I thought I'd share my helmet's public debut for the Avengers midnight showing. Anyone that asked, I just told them that I (Tony) was drunk when I got dressed and I put the wrong suit on.

Thanks, I've been trying to convince the other two guys (and the one who took the picture) to take on Hulk, Hawkeye, and Capt. America. Back in November, they were all for it. But that wore off quick. Maybe I'll be able to convince them again after seeing Avengers.

Necroing a thread just to post an insult. Yet another quality post by Mr nobody... Thanks for your great contribution to the community.

Yeah, any kind of helmet without body armor looks a little big. Once you put that helmet on a suit of armor it will look just right. Take a look at anyone wearing a motorcycle helmet... they are bobble heads too, lol.

Samohtep did a good job on this helmet. Looks great.
