well my Spardo is getting closer to looking like it will be wearable, so I decided to post some progress pics in case someone else wanted to have a go at making their own...
first I drew out some patterns based on the Stelios model
I got some leather at Tandy and then started with the back because it seems easier
after I got the back of my spardo done - it seems like it might need a slight tuck in the back around my lumbar area- I just have to see how it fits once I assemble the whole thing...
right now it is a little too porno style to post pics on anyone wearing it, but it seems OK.
next I worked on the hard part of the Spardo...
rough the shape from floral foam
smooth it out
bondo and sand sand sand
1st try!
side view
check the size
then I checked my pattern (in vinyl)
I'm now guessing that the cup is probably glued into the screen used ones? That must be how they get that tight stretch in front?
anyway now that the front part is done in genuine leather - it lays flat much more like the real one. I have to glue in the cup piece now and then do the inside lining before I can add the cross straps. It's getting closer!
here are the parts before assembly
and after
after fitting I decided to sew a little more curve into the cup part after test fitting - now it stretches better around the cup with fewer funky wrinkles
then I barged in the plastic piece
and finally did a test of the straps before I cut out the inside panels and dye everything
also you will notice I had to rip out the edge stitch that I put in when I did the leather part. Learn from my mistake!
next after I glued the cup I reglued the edges to the new fold line
cut out some lining pieces, sewed in some velcro (and some on the ends of the back piece too)
and glued in the lining for both halves and the straps (I did this a little at a time to avoid wrinkles if possible)
here is a pic of the done inside lining
it was late and we were tired, but here is one crappy pic of the done spardo after dying the straps. In the morning I put snaps in the back, but have not had a chance to take pics since then.
I put the finishing touches on my spardo this weekend, adding a little bit of antiquing gel to darken it up a bit.
ok so it is not perfect, but not so bad for home made...
