300: Leonidas Crest (discussion)

Long story short, im finishing up my second version of the 300 helmet that will have an optional crest down the middled for the leonidas helmets (molding it seperate from the helmet).
I wanted his crest/mohawk to be as accurate as poss. and I wanted to get some input from you guys on how this was or can be recreated.

This video has a great shot of his helmets and shows part of the construction of the mohawk right around 2:57 in the video.

Now with that said I wanted to see if we could get some ideas on how it was assembled. It looks as though they have small strips, almost like a inner moehawk, that held the hair/feather in place and they were probable layed into the crest, rotating hair layers and feather layers, then at the bottom the curved strip pieces (holding the hair and feathers in a line) were glued down, or poss. all the layers were glued into an external position 1st and then placed into the crest once alined and finished.

At 3:07 in the video you can see this "brown" or "tannish" color material curled up on table. I think this is the material they used to create the base for strips of individual hair, but I dont have a clue as to what it could be or how I would be able to get the horse/feather to lay in perfect strips like that so they would be able to laye ontop of each other.

Any ideas from you guys would be much appriciated.

Thanks

-Tim
