300 Frank Miller Spartan spear (in progess build)

Several months ago I'd had a friend ask about possibly commissioning me to build him a 300 Spartan spear (from Frank Miller's movie). I was pretty busy, but told him I would do it as time allows. This wasn't a problem, as he had no dead-line for a costume, etc.

So I started researching the spear and gathering up reference material and than I got super busy with some other projects and the spear got pushed to the back burner. But last week a had a little bit of time to work on this... so I thought I'd share some pics along the way...

I started off by drawing some crude plans of the spear tips in auto-CAD, printing them out and using them to make a pattern out of ABS.

Than I started roughing in the basic shape in bondo.

a lot of sanding later... sand, touch-up spots with bondo... repeat

And here's where it stands, just needs some texture applied and it'll be ready to mold.

Just FYI, the plan is to sculpt the tips completely un-weathered, as they appeared early in the film. Once they are cast in resin, I can than beat-up each set uniquely.

Awesome build bud, but... what about the "casting bumps"? I know you're no going to add battle damage but the bumps seen all over the helmet, shield and also spare are there as part of a simulated "metal cast".

Do I explain?

Anyway, well done SC :thumbsup

That is excellent. I have a half finished one on my bench that I attempted out of clay and a metal base but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as that!

Great preliminary work! I really enjoy seeing the "in progress" threads. Thanks for showing your early work off. :)

Finally got around to updating this thread...

I hunted around and located the correct size "ball" for the lower tip

I flattened the bottom and mounted/glued the four sided tip. Prior to that I reinforced the inside of the tip with epoxy.

little sanding, little primer...

I than hit the two of them with some texture. Not quite perfect, but close enough for my needs. Also from what I have seen the spear tip early in the film actually have very little texture. Considering I will be casting these in resin, I can weather/distress individually.

Got around to molding it a while back, unfortunately I completely forgot to take pics of the silicone being poured. But here's a few more pics...

I clayed up both of the tips...

Next I build a "box" around the tip and add some "keys" into the clay. Than I simply pour the silicone, let it dry and than flip it over and repeat.

And presto! These were the first few castings out of the molds.

This was a finished spear tip, that I have painted and lightly weathered.

Now on to making some of the wooden dowels :cool
