2nd Doctor, Patrick Troughton's recorder

Well, I saw a few threads where people had various versions of Patrick Troughton's recorder as part of their Dr Who collection, and decided it was a quick, fairly simple build, so I thought I'd put one together.

Here's a pic of the Troughton recorder I like most, so this is what I decided to go for.

So, after some research, I found it to be most like a Tudor Soprano recorder, as seen here. I bought mine from Groth Music online, for less that $5.00. Plastic, but everything seems to match up nicely.

Oh boy I will be watching this one. I have a Yamaha recorder my daughter is using that I will be wanting to do the same thing with once this school year is over :)

Good luck and keep us updated !

At first, it felt very slick, almost oily. So I cleaned it with soap and water, dried it out, and it still felt slick, so I guess it is just a very slick plastic.

Next, I pulled it apart, and masked off the silver ring end, the joint, and the mouthpiece with blue painters tape to protect them and keep then paint free. Then, gave both pieces two coats of Rust-oleum Ultra Cover 2x coverage gray primer. I've used this one before with great success, and it bonds to plastic, so it seemed an obvious choice. Seems to have bonded nicely, as expected.

Later tonight I will go paint shopping. I need to find the right shades of both light and darker blue. I doubt I'll be able to match exactly, but I should be able to find a couple that are pretty close. I'm planning on painting the whole thing in the lighter shade, letting it 'completely' dry for several days, then masking it off and doing the darker blue.

More soon.

Ok... picked out the colors. Here's the lighter blue. This is one coat, over 2 coats of primer. I'll do a second coat when this dries, then let it set for a week before masking it for the darker blue.

Tried to make tassels a few times, and failed miserably...lol. So, I bought these online for $9.00 incl. shipping. I'll just dye them hunter green.

This is where I always mess up. I paint something, then sit anxiously waiting for it to dry. Wait ten minutes and say! "Oh, it's done now!" grab it, leave fingerprints all over it, strip and repeat....... :lol

That's looking great!

I have slightly more self control....kinda... maybe... oh crap, I want to mask it now, dang it!

Those look dead on!
I agree. I was surprised to actually find something so close, considering the Troughton ones were from the 60's.

Now, as long as I don't screw them up when I dye them...lol

found a visible drip on the smaller piece, so I had to wet sand it down before the second coat goes on. Will repaint tomorrow.

Been sick, so just getting back to this.

masked off the recorder, and painted the darker blue. See if you can spot the one tiny little mistake I made in the painted shot below. Hint (it's not the tape I left on top...lol)

tassels came in... from Morocco! I didn't know that was where they'd be shipping from. They are spot on. I can't wait to dye them!

very nice so farm looking forward to seeing it finished. wasnt pat's wooden though? i seem to remember my older brother had wooden ones at his school. plastic wasnt so popular way back when.

Quite probably.

However, I wasn't able to find a wooden version of this design I could afford, so I cheaped out ;)

Finally got back to the recorder after about a week of sick time in bed.

Here's the dots down the side. I tried painting them using a hole punched in painters tape, but a couple bled and it was difficult to line them up properly.

Eventually, I remembered what another poster had said about gluing the holes on. I then took some typical printer paper, spray painted a couple coats of each color, and used a hole punch on it. I thought they'd bee too small, but turns out they were just about the right size. So, I threw some double sided scotch tape on the non-painted side, then I eyeballed the placement, and wound up with this...
