well I am not number one, I'll say that, but when this is over i want to get feedback on my build, I persoannly thought it was good and would do better than it is.....will we be allowed to post up our builds and ask for feedback?

As I understand, it will be encouraged. I look forward to reading about all of the builds, and sharing my own.

Personally, I'm very disappointed as to how few votes my saber is getting. I was really excited to show everyone what I came up with, and it seems that I've just been left behind in the dust. No one has voted for mine, at all, and that really makes me feel kinda poorly. I understand that other sabers are better, but I'm not sure that any other given saber is 127 times better than mine is, or whatever the number is now.

re: 2010 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest - WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

I was actually surprised that mine did get a vote. I thought about voting for my own just so that I would get at least one, but decided that I would rather give the vote to someone that deserved it.

I narrowed it down to four and then kept changing my mind back and fourth between those four before finally deciding on one. One of the ones that has zero votes was in my final four. If I could have seen the results before placing my vote there's a good chance that I might have voted for it instead.

That's exactly this issue we were recently discussing. I have absolutely no doubt that your saber is superb, as I felt was mine. (In fact, I though mine was unbeatable when I submitted it. :lol) But the single vote system leads to the "Best" saber getting a disproportionate number of votes, as few will be motivated to vote for "Second Best".

I cannot help but to feel largely responsible for the situation, as I was amongst the loudest voices arguing against, what has now been revealed as, the staff's wisdom on this point. I guess that's what happens when you expect the worst of human nature to prevail, ehh. :unsure

re: 2010 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest - WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

But it would be okay to get bumped off the winners list because the number you were assigned by someone else was high? Just food for thought.

In the end there's probably no fair way to do it. Here's hoping that all ties are broken!

I sent them in to the staff, in a slightly different order then they came into me. And I can tell you that they were posted in a MUCH different order then they came in to me. The order is there for rather random. Doing the spreadsheet thing, is a bit like gambling with someone else's money. I mean, yes, it could mean, that if there are 2 folks tied for 12th place, one of them will fall off the prize list. So, who gets something, and who doesn't is a mater of chance, but I don't think that is more, or less fare then a coin flip, or deciding the list based on when the entries came in.

I think the spreadsheet idea, at least has something slightly more tangible to it, then the other means of determining things.

I'm sure, ideally, we would have a tie braker. But, that could drag out for ever. I mean, right now we may be headed for a few ties. If we were to start tie braking threads, for each of them, when folks vote to brake each tie, each with a week to vote, it could just keep, going, and going. And what if they tie agian? What if everyone just gets bored with it all, and no-one bothers to vote?

If we had opened this up to the public, ties still could have happened. If we had reveled the identity of each person in the contest, it would have just been a popularity contest. I really don't see any perfect way to do it, that will make everyone happy.

I like the poll as it is. I would be happy if we had it again next time.

As for the ties. I think we should stick with the spreadsheet thing, this year.

Next year, I think, we may be less arbitrary with the number of prizes. We may just have prizes for say the top 5 spots, or something like that, with "back up" prizes" in the case of ties. If there are five clear winners, then we would just hand out the 5 prizes, and anyone offering to donated prizes beyond that, would get to keep there items, or offer them for another contest. If there was a tie, then we could call on the extra donations, to make sure that all the top 5 places get someing, even those involved in a tie. Though that still raises the issue, of who gets to pick first, but at least no-one would fall off the prize list that way. I don't know, I have a year to work it out for next year, but for this year, we are going with the spreadsheet. Right, or wrong, that is the way we are going this year.

It's not that I don't appreciate everyone's suggestions, and comments on this. We just need A plan, and if I change that plan every time someone posts a new idea, it will just lead to confusion, and disorder. With all this talk about these things, we have folks contacting me, asking if the contest is over, among other things, so it is already confusing some. I just feel like we need to make a decision, and stick with it, and this year, that decision is the spreadsheet.

You can see the results before you vote, but you have to look at the poll when you are not logged in. If you are logged in, it just shows you the thing to let you vote. After you vote, then, of course, you can see the results whether you are logged in or not.

Hang in there. Last year I made a saber that got zero votes, and in the sonic screwdriver contest I got zero votes despite having what I thought was a potential winning entry (once the voting ended and I showed my sonic a few people said "oh that's awesome! I didn't even see it!").

I was really bummed but in this contest I finally have received a vote. In past contests I've always been a high number which I thought hurt my votes because people would be looking through all the sabers and put more thought into the first few potentially skipping later ones out of saber fatigue (in past contests higher numbers generally score less). Maybe that's why I feel bad about the spreadsheet idea, if the saber fatigue thing is true it's like you're being punished twice for the high number. That may just be my past bitterness coming through though.

All I can say is that whoever built that White lightsaber, has some mad skills.

Very nice! You should put up a build thread for that, I'd love to see how you made it.:cool

Voting ends tomorrow night, so if you haven't voted yet, you should do so soon. :)

re: 2010 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest - WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

It was really a hard pick....but there was one that I would definitely wear on my belt. With seeing all the talent I'm actually glad I didn't compete...I don't think I would have stood a chance!
