2006 Sonic screwdriver?

I was wondering if anyone knew what the differences (if any) were between the series 2 sonic screwdriver and the toy that's out.

I know that the original SS was too fragile and would break at the slightest provocation. I understood (or thought) that the BBC props department got the molds from the toy for making the new one. But are they the same size? Did the beeb just go buy some toys off the shelf? Or are they the same size as the toy, but made with metal instead of plastic?

thanks,
Jason

that was the story, but watching all of season 2... it really doesnt look identical...looks more like parts and pieces were used...

that's what I thought after seeing it. Like there was an upgrade done to the emitter and neck that weren't part of the original toy.

any one have any decent screencaps?

I'm SURE it's not the head of the toy (See images below to compare) because apart from the different shapes, you can see from your 1st image, Kylash327, it looks like tooled metal. not painted plastic.

also the body of the 2006 sonic screwdriver does not have the button "bumps" at either ends of the blue "stripe" or even holes where they were, and I cannot see any filling from Kylash327's images.

thanks, Jeddie. That's a good comparison shot.

is it my imagination, or is the ring right below the emitter black on the prop? it certainly looks it from this angle

Kylash, do you have any more decent screencaps? Or can you point me to a program that I could use? I've got all the new episodes with me at work, and capped them would be easy.

Yes, it does look it in that screen cap, but it could be a trick of the lighting. We'd need to see it with the blue LED off and more amibient light to be sure. However, with only that pic to go from, it does indeed look like a black band right behind the LED.

From what I read they are using the toy mold, and design but they
are making it out of different materials, and custom a paint job.

nope, i got those shots from someone elses post here a while back =\ You should be able to pause your episodes and do print screen and past into an image program on a PC, apple+shift+3 on a MAC

Other differences is how the main eggshell area is coloured, the screwdriver extends alot shorter as well at times. Its definatly a Luxeon LED rather than a black light, and as said the blue line is simply a blue line and he presses a button where the the slider would be.

The BBC only bought the molds and didn't use off the shelf toys for this, thats what they have said and based on the evidence thats correct.

This is something I definatly want to look into getting made next year :)

Primrodo, thanks for the extra screengrabs.

so a Luxeon LED, the emitter seems more elongated than the hemisphere on the toy, and the teeth where the emitter meets the main tube are not as prominant. Colouring seems vastly different.

IMO, the slider mechanism is in place, but would that be a good place to put the activator? And could it be run off a smaller battery?

[EDIT] on the other hand, it seems like no matter how far the neck is extended, the activator is always near the top.

Think the toy's dimensions would be about right?

yeah see thats what I never got, on both 2005 and 2006's the button was always at the top...

Yeah I think the Toys dims are about right and the evidence that they used the molds is there, especially on the cage portion.

It definitely looks to me like they started the 2nd season with the same Sonic Screwdriver prop as last year. It looks in New Earth like it's the same (smaller) size and the emitter head (the blue thingy) looks first season.

Midway through the season it starts to look different. From Rise of the Cybermen onwards it looks like they machiined a new one. Definitely larger than the previous version, with a taller blue emitter, but not as simplified as the toy version either.

Love to get my hands on both versions now....

I read somewhere that a Canadian company had bought the rights to the toys to sell here in NA. Anyone have the scoup on this? Will we be seeing these on sale here before the new season starts on the CBC in October?

Cheers,
Neil.

im also guessing that new LED torch version thats coming out soon may be more accurate..

we can hope. Any word on whether it will make noise, or just light up? Every time I try to contact the company, I get ignored

Anyone know if the torch will have an extending neck? I've got three on order, thanks to a kindly forum member here :) Just in case my first modification doesn't go too well. :rolleyes

well, that's disappointing.

Assuming we were to try to make this, what do you guys think would be the best? Aluminum? Something lighter, maybe? What about the switch?
