I know, not a Movie prop per se but a prop build none the less.

3 weeks ago I got an invite to an engagement/birthday party. I decided to go as Slash from Guns & Roses. I got the costume sorted (Hat I purchased from a guy in Geelong who makes them). Then I had a think about a guitar. I was initially going to go a $10 inflatable one through eBay but then I thought "No don't be so bloody lazy, make one"
That started my 2 week prop guitar build. The basis of it was closed cell EVA Foam safety mats that come in packs of 4 from Bunnings. I made my 1:1 scale template to trace around them cut out 3 pieces for the body and 3 for the neck. I made a support from PVC pipe to give it some rigidity which went into layers 1 and 2 and then played layer 3 on top which left just enough of a curve to simulate the curvature I wanted. This was all glued together with hot glue, then I sealed the surface with 5 coats of watered down pva craft glue (wood glue), then 2 coats of straight PVA glue. After which I primed the surface with tamiya plastic primer.
I handed it over to a tattoo artist friend of mine to do the body and neck paintjob. I have not got enough skills with that yet, and then after that it was back to me to do all the final assembly. The Machine heads are actual Stratocaster ones that a friend gave me for free (wow). They went in after a little carving on the side of the head. The knobs are from actual guitars as well which I also got given for free. The rest of it was all carved and painted bits of plastic and Perspex I had scrounged from various things. Oh and one aluminium folder paper binder below the "pickups".
The strings are made of elastic cord similar from what is used to hold party hats on your head. I got that stuff from a $2 shop.
As I tied it all up I was really shocked that I had managed to pull it off. I got a good result which went well with my costume
