2 Junk Sabers (Sith Rancor Hide saber & Jedi damaged saber)

I'm working on a Sith Stalker costume for my kid's Star Wars party in May,and part of the costume calls for a trophy sabers from fallen foes. Both sabers are junk built from pvc.

(Sith Rancor Hide saber) 1 tube of pvc with a bell end of a pvc pipe and a few rings from a larger diameter tube & the end of a broken plastic flashlight for a pommel. I had a sheet of leather that was stamped to look like alligator hide that I used a piece to make a faux Rancor hide grip (cost about $5,and I have enough to make grips for a few more sabers with it). I stitched the leather wrap with a dark brown boot lace and made some claws to hang from the pommel out of Translucent Sculpey. Then I gutted a squishy toy that was at the dollar store for it's blinky LED setup inside and put it in the saber. When you shake the saber it makes the blinky go off for about 10 seconds.

(Battle damaged saber) I wanted a jedi saber for my Starkiller costume that would obviously be from a fallen jedi. So I put A big slice in the side of this one and made it charred looking around the slice and then I gutted some electronics from various junk in my garage to line the insides of the saber. I put a plastic crystal in it and once again gutted a light up squishy toy,but I have it hanging on a string from the inside of the pommel so that walking around bumps the mechanism and sets it off while I move around with it on my belt.

Let me know if I did ok for my first try! Now my son wants one for him that is his size!

Looks pretty cool!

I like the damaged one best though. I'd add a bit of bright silver paint or foil around the cut mark to make it look more molten metal-ish, but it looks awesome as is.

Bonus cool points for the light up bits and bobs :)

They look really good for being made of pvc and other parts. The lights really help with the realism too and the rancor hide looks really like leather.

yea man that battle damaged saber is awesome! just kept the same circuit from what you gutted or did you make a new one to make it light up?

Yeah, I think the battle damaged one looks great. I love the lines, a lot cleaner/sleeker than I am used to seeing in a saber, the "scar" is really quite convincing, and the glowing electronics look really slick.

Is the idea that this thing got sliced by another saber? Because I always figured that should happen WAY more often. Why would Qui-Gon aim for anything else BUT Darth Maul's saber staff/hilt?

What is the grip material? That is the only thing that reads as "inexpensive" to me. It looks more foam-like than rubber. I love the single rivet at the end though.

Thanks guys! I work around irrigation lines (well, when it's not raining) so I just snatched some scrap pieces. I wanted something that looked pretty cool from a few feet away but something that I wasn't worried about messing up.

If I have a chance to make another damaged saber, I'll probably give this one away (I want a sith version now) or trade. Maybe I'll make a crystal reveal pvc saber, hehe.

@thd9791 - The circuits are from a little broken stereo. The lights come in these little $1 kids toys:

The cool thing is there's usually 2 or 3 LEDs in them and they're quite bright and they blink in sequences!

@Copperwatt - Yeah, I'm really not a fan of the grips on the damaged saber either, they're some cheap craft foam. I figure some poor jedi lost a few fingers if nothing else. I don't know why it doesn't happen more either, hehe. Anytime I used to fight my brother with sticks growing up we always went for each other's hands!

I never thought of those. I bet you can find them in the toy isle of the local drug store.

I'd do that but I have one of those cats that refuses to play. I've given it every cat toy I could find and it just stares at them.

Last time I gave it catnip (catcrank) though it run upside down under the dining room table for an hour, lol !

Ooohh, so the "emitter" is where the PVC flares out to connect to the next piece, right?

,they're some cheap craft foam.

Some sort of t-track or old wiper blades would look great, or even just black rubber stripping of some sort. I kinda like the simple clean square shape, if it looked more solid and smooth.

Ha! Same here. He knew it would make me really mad, and he thought that was hilarious. Even with some sort of hilt, you have to really TRY to avoid the hands. I also wonder why Jedis don't just slide down the blade, because I can't imagine the emitter acting as much of a hilt. Maybe this is where the Jedi reflexes come into play.

lol gut it for the parts and throw it to the cats as a new chew toy.

I would feel like I was harvesting and gutting some sort of sea anemone

Yeah, I just used the "bell end" connector of another irrigation line. I could use wiper blades. I have some ones still in the box that were the wrong size.

Haha, sounds like you had an older brother too!

Yeah cutting the squishy toys open just seems wrong. As soon as I started it instantly made me think of cutting my sons umbilical cord when he was born *shudders* .

Awww man, I just had calamari. ;)

After seeing this and the tooth fairy sculpt, I would not be adverse to a pictured tutorial showing how you do the teeth :)
