2-1B Medical Droid, anybody been working on one?

Has anyone here decided to do any runs on the entire 2-1B droid for those who are interested? or what about any other droids besides r2 or 3po?
Id certainly be interested.

Bump, any progress guys?
Hey Tusken aren't tou bronging a 2-1B torso to C4?
any progress pics?

-Mikie

Well I am planning on making the full droid but progress is slow, I have a different project I need to finish in time for C4. After that I will concentrate more of my efforts on 2-1B.

I think Fort Tusken is making a full scale one as well but can't seem to see anything about it :angel

Other than that, zorg is making the torture droids head
from what I hear some other fellow has a Killer IG-88 that's going to debut at C4. there's mouse droids, Gonk droids, a Bomar Monk spider droid and all the variations on the R2 astromech ex: R3, R4, R5, R7, and R8.

fellas chime in if I missed any

Yes I am still working on it. Have a bunch of stuff going on. I should have the head, neck and an arm at C4. Most of what I am doing is new so it hasn't always worked out as planned and is a slow process.

I will sell a limited number of the vac form parts. The molds are what I am finishing up now.

I haven't had time to upload progress shots but rest assured when I get some time I will update my webpage.

Here is the latest. The Vac bucks and the display at CIV. Hopefully in week or so I will vac the body parts and the neck again in the final thickness plastic.

torture droid head is done, expect to see a cz-1 head very shortly:love

As a Zorg 2-1B head owner I'd also be interested in a neck if anyones making one :)

I have been working on my car but should get some necks vacced soon and will post here when I do. The problem will be the aluminum neck. I may have to have those custom machined so need to get a quote on that. It would be good to know what people want, just the upper neck or the lower as well. Either way it would be nice to have the aluminum neck part. They would be about an 1/8 inch thick aluminum disk.

I'm in for a neck.
I just need the upper part. I'll end mine at the neck ring.

The neck ring is three pieces - two metal rings with a white nylon ring in between (all three the same diameter).
Looks like each metal ring has a little lip for the clear plastic to go over and attach to. the original is probably a found object - some sort of bearing that glides on the nylon. It would be nice if we could just track them down vs. machining something.

What's the diameter of the neck?
I found nylon discs 6" diameter, 1/8" thick.

I think 6" is about right. I found a place that used to make 6" aluminum discs but now they don't. They can possibly custom make them but I never heard back. After careful study of the neck the two discs ride on the plastic bearing. I am using teflon sheet for mine. Originally I thought they were rings but they definitely started with discs or plate. Do you have any pictures showing the lip? I didn't really think there was one last time I looked. I was hoping to find something like the Rockler Hardware bearing used on R2 projects but in a 6", but there aren't any I could find.

Here's a shot I took at the recent exhibit in Ohio.

Each metal plate is approx. 1/8" thick if their diameter is 6".
There's a rod running up a center hole in the plates.
You can see the step through the clear plastic. Looks like it steps in 1/8" and the step is another 1/8" tall.
The metal color looks pretty warm in the pic, but it is silver in color - probably steel.

It's possible that this is 5 separate pieces. Each half of the neck might be squeezed in between two plates. If the clear plastic is sandwiched like that it makes sense - it would be very secure.

Much easier to manufacture if it was 5 discs too. That makes sense. Now to find a source for the discs that doesn't cost too much. I think aluminum is best since most of the droid is AL. I will have to see what the final dimensions are of my neck once it is vacu-formed with the thicker plastic.

Hey all, I have been making some progress on 2-1B. The newer plastic I am using is working out great. I still need to work on my vac bucks a bit more to get them setup to make better quality parts. I am looking into the aluminum neck rings and need to know how many are interested and would you want just the upper neck or both the lower and upper. A full set would require 4 rings (two inside the plastic and two outside if we do it that way. If I get these machined we are looking at around $100 per set just for the rings provided I do 10 total sets. For a really small number and if you just wanted the upper neck I would probably just make them myself.

As far as the plastic vacced neck goes I am thinking around $40 for an upper shipped and $80 for the upper and lower shipped in the US.

I guess at this point I just want to get an idea of the demand so I can plan how to do this most effectively.

I will post pictures soon of the vacced parts and the rest of my progress.

Thanks!

glad to see you still working away on this project chris.

if i remember correctly there should be some info on the "blueprints" pic in the art of esb book. on the size of the neck. i think its the same dia as the 3po shoulder rings, im sure it quotes this size?

as for working on a 2-1b yes i am currently modifying a front face part of one of my casts.cutting the head in half i have extended back the depth of the face by approx 10 mm, effectivly moving the metal halo part back the way and increasing the overall depth of the head. i can report i do think its a big improvment as one of the things i was not 100% happy with was the depth of the sculpt. iunfortunatly it puts the spanner in the works for me wanting to get any other parts as mine will not be to the same spec.

ill try and get some pics at some stage

Art of ESB indicates that 2-1B's shoulder is the same as C-3PO's.
The exact blueprint notation says: 6 5/8" Shoulder joint (C-3PO)
There is no notation about the neck.

Looking at pics from 2-1B on exhibit the neck rings look different than the shoulder ones. Necks rings appear to be smaller diameter and thinner.
If the shoulder is 6 5/8" like the blueprint says then the neck comes out to 6" diameter (same as Chris determined).

Zorg - I see what you mean by the face depth.
I might modify mine as well, but not if I can't get the neck parts to fit.

Chris - I'm in for the upper neck parts. I'm building the head only.

I will leave the upper necks untrimmed so it can be cut to fit the heads as long as it isn't too different I think it can be made to fit. There is some slack that can be adjusted in the chin area.

From measuring the blueprint the neck is smaller than the shoulders.

My shoulders are going to be 6" since that is the only size I could get my aluminum hemisperes in. The neck will probably be pretty close to 5-3/4" at this point since that is how my molds came out, so hopefully that won't be much of a problem. The more I work on this the more I feel if it is ever going to get done some dimensional concessions have to be made.
