1st Spider-Man Costume

I've always been a huge Spider-Man fan as a kid, but never had the chance to wear a Spider-Man costume. This year, my two daughters wanted to be Spider-girls, which inspired me to make the family become characters of the Spider-Man universe. I couldn't find any Spider-Girl (May Parker) costumes that would fit my 9 yr-old daughter. She didn't like the Spider-Gwen, and it's too cold and revealing for Silk. My 4 yr-old just wanted to be the pink Spider-girl. So I just took them to Party City to pick out their costumes. I looked in Halloween stores for my costume, but they weren't as realistic or ideal for my preference. I searched the web, and found zentaizone. (I've read about zentai-zentai, so I didn't wanna be part of their schemes and hurt hard workers like Orhadar.) Anyway, I'm posting the stages of my costume during the modifications. The raccoon is my niece, who was trying on her Rocket costume in its early-stage.

When I received the costume, this is how it fitted. It felt pretty good. After I put on the detachable mask, I decided that I wouldn't tuck in the mask so it didn't bunch up as much, and it just looked better.

The small modifications were made with the TJack faceshell, frames, and lenses. Theses small modifications made the big difference to this costume. Special thanks to TJack for the product, and the prompt shipping to receive in a timely manner before the Halloween events occurred.

I used the strong magnets from Home Depot for my lenses, to help me align the eye holes for the faceshell. I had some help with my brother to adjust the mask to an ideal position.

My brother was working on his Star Lord helmet, so he helped with the eye holes and vent holes with his dremel. The holes are small since I didn't use any precise measurements.

Next, I softened the frames with a hair dryer, since I didn't have a heat gun. Pressed the softened frames onto the faceshell until cooled. Then, I practiced on some foam frames for the magnetics to be glued into the frames. I didn't want to damage the frames beyond repair, so I wanted to practice. (The foam was too weak, so I just trusted myself to do in the frames.)

There was a Halloween event downtown, so we took our costumes for a trial run to discover any flaws.

We took some pics with kids and other fans. My brother was Star Lord. My girls and I found a spider web; we couldn't miss this opportunity for a photo.

One flaw was the missing soles for the costume, which was beginning to rip a hole in the bottom of the costume. So I had kung fu shoes outer soles separated and painted black. Put on the cloth shoe, and glued onto the soles, using hot glue to clean up the edges.

Another flaw, the lenses were uneven because I neglected to glue the magnets to the faceshell. So I lined it up, and used hot glue (just so I am able to make anymore adjustments). The glue doesn't look good from the inside view, but the mask looked better after the adjustment.

You can see the new alignment of the frames on the mask.

Oh, this is my wife. I also made her Black Cat costume (fairly simple); the black suit was bought at a Halloween store, the white fur was Santa beards bought at Family Dollar, opera gloves, and a foam mask. She didn't get any pics during our events, but I've caught her while she was taking a break.

Now, the family is ready for the upcoming Comic Con events.

Before we went to Comic Con, I made my daughter's Spider girl lenses. Using some foam and black screen mesh, I shaped and glued the lenses.

She put tried it on, and it fit just right. She loved it.

I also made a template of the web shooters. Next, I used all the leftover red foam and layered the dimensions of the web shooters. This is what I came up with after a lot of patience. Later, I just glued a strong magnet to the bottom and used some ribbon to glue a wristband with a magnet under the costume. It made a good impression during photoshoots.

Finally, we arrived to Comic Con. Thankfully, my costume was very appealing and didn't give me any issues at the con. My daughter's mask didn't hold up as strong as I wanted it to. It was nice from the beginning, but the adhesive didn't bond strong enough to last all day. However, we did get a lot of good pictures with many fans and other cosplayers. It was a blast.

This is where they ask, "whose side are you on?"

So I just cruised with the Merc with a mouth.
