Hi All,
I've wanted to do this costume for a while.
Always enjoyed the Brigadier and his teams exploits, was really hoping they'd get a spin off series one day.
Anyhow, the Fundraising group I belong to (www.exewing.co.uk) are doing a charity Doctor Who event this summer and as part of it we are running a U.N.I.T. boot camp (nerf gun shooting range, assault course, find the secret Dalek flying saucer forcefield code and Alien invader recognition test), perfect excuse to get my costume together.
Settled on a Sergeant Benton portrayal, started the research last summer, it took a while and a lot of help to identify the components that go into the uniform.
I thought the hard part would be the identifying of items and the actual acquisition would be easy, just go into any army surplus store and pick it all up right?
Nope, not that easy at all!
The jacket for instance, rare as hens teeth.
Components that went into it:
'60 pattern smock and trousers.
'58 pattern webbing
'37 pattern Gaiters
SAS beret
British Army boots (old pattern, again took ages to find)
Sterling SMG
Scrim net
Sergeants stripes
Custom arm patch and beret cap badge.
On to the photo's:
Benton usually sported Sgt stripes on his smock, in the photo from the story ROBOT below he didn't, but as it is the norm I put them on mine.
"FIVE ROUNDS RAPID!"
There are a couple of things I need to improve, sort out the draw string on the jacket for one, a better shoulder patch for another.
My cap badge is okay but there is a much better one being done here:

I'd like to get a replica SLR rifle and a walkie talkie radio as often sported by Benton in his publicity shots.
I pretty much like all the UNIT uniforms, including the new series versions, however the above is the one I've always had a soft spot for!
Bring on the Alien hordes!
Cheers,
Andy
