1970's UNIT Soldier from Doctor Who

Hi All,

I've wanted to do this costume for a while.

Always enjoyed the Brigadier and his teams exploits, was really hoping they'd get a spin off series one day.

Anyhow, the Fundraising group I belong to (www.exewing.co.uk) are doing a charity Doctor Who event this summer and as part of it we are running a U.N.I.T. boot camp (nerf gun shooting range, assault course, find the secret Dalek flying saucer forcefield code and Alien invader recognition test), perfect excuse to get my costume together.

Settled on a Sergeant Benton portrayal, started the research last summer, it took a while and a lot of help to identify the components that go into the uniform.

I thought the hard part would be the identifying of items and the actual acquisition would be easy, just go into any army surplus store and pick it all up right?

Nope, not that easy at all!

The jacket for instance, rare as hens teeth.

Components that went into it:

'60 pattern smock and trousers.
'58 pattern webbing
'37 pattern Gaiters
SAS beret
British Army boots (old pattern, again took ages to find)
Sterling SMG
Scrim net
Sergeants stripes
Custom arm patch and beret cap badge.

On to the photo's:

Benton usually sported Sgt stripes on his smock, in the photo from the story ROBOT below he didn't, but as it is the norm I put them on mine.

There are a couple of things I need to improve, sort out the draw string on the jacket for one, a better shoulder patch for another.

My cap badge is okay but there is a much better one being done here:

I'd like to get a replica SLR rifle and a walkie talkie radio as often sported by Benton in his publicity shots.

I pretty much like all the UNIT uniforms, including the new series versions, however the above is the one I've always had a soft spot for!

Bring on the Alien hordes!

Cheers,

Andy

Very cool! I thought a Sgt. Benton costume would be a great one to do! Sadly, much harder to do these days, and especially from the states.

Thanks everyone.

I hear what you are saying about it harder to do nowadays, it's the same in the UK, the '60 pattern gear seems very rare and collectable.

In hindsight the No 2 dress uniform would have been a lot easier to do.

Cheers,

Andy

Looking good. One suggestion though, you might want to fold over the front of your beret some for a nice proper military look and it will make it screen accurate as well.

Thanks Riceball.

I would wear the beret correctly, if my melon wasn't too big! :lol

Benton usually sported Sgt stripes on his smock, in the photo from the story ROBOT below he didn't, but as it is the norm I put them on mine.

Whilst away on business this week I watched Robot again.
I think the reason he is not wearing stripes is that in this story he has been promoted to Warrant Officer, which I guess meant removing his stripes and just wearing the warrant office rank insignia, which I believe is on the lower part of the right hand sleeve.

I looked at this detail as i am trying to put together a UNIT uniform from this era.
But as you say, the correct jacket/smock is rarer than hens teeth!
Any pointers on where to get one would be very much appreciated.

But I have there Sterling L2A3 MkIV SMG, and the beret.
Just need to keep an eye out for other bits.
I am not in any hurry so will patient and keep searching.

Cyber, they do pop up on ebay now and then (there's a large jacket and several pairs of trousers on there at the moment). I got a set from a surplus place, the jacket was too short so I got a replacement the right length from ebay, but will need to lose about a stone before it'll fit me....... Search for 1960 pattern, 60 pattern or 60 patt.

Yes, I have seen the one on eBay, and will be bidding on that, hopefully not too many people will be bidding!

Missed out on the eBay 1960 pattern jacket, got outbid.
So if anyone sees any sources in the UK for the 1960 pattern jacket and trousers in a size 9 then I'd appreciate a heads up.
But in the mean time will keep searching.

Sorry to stir up the dead, but is anyone reproducing anything close yet or can are any of the WW2'ish No2 be made to look the part?
